Scat Daddy Filly Wins Sorrento

Pretty N Cool (Scat Daddy) winning the Sorrento Stakes (Gr.2) at Del Mar

Exciting filly Pretty n Cool (2f Scat Daddy x Stayclassysandiego, by Rockport Harbor) kept her unbeaten record intact when posting a dominant win over Gomo (2f Uncle Mo x Gentle Audrey, by Elusive Quality) in the $200,250 Grade II Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar to give Coolmore sires the quinella.

An eye-catching debut winner at the same venue last month in the mud, the Bob Baffert trained filly was a firm favourite and ran accordingly.

She stalked the tear away leader Undisputed and powered past when asked for an effort to take the six and a half furlong contest by two and three-quarter lengths from the late closing Uncle Mo filly Gomo.

“I saw how fast that filly up front was going (Undisputed) and I didn’t want to go with her, so I took a hold,” said winning rider Martin Garcia.

“I can do what I want with this filly. When I asked her she went to the front. I stayed busy on her. She needed this race. It’ll set her up for her next one. She’s going to be a really good filly.”

Bob Baffert is likely to target the Grade I Debutante Stakes at Del Mar on September 15 with the daughter of Scat Daddy, who has now won two from two and $162,000 in prizemoney.

“We thought that she could run and she’s shown it,” he said.

“I liked what she did today. That one horse (Undisputed) must have bolted. She was going pretty fast. But Martin (Garcia) knew what he was doing. He got her settled and then she came running.”

A $160,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Pretty n Cool is the first winner for stakes-placed Stayclassysandiego, a half-sister to Grade I winner Sean Avery.

She is the 52nd stakes-winner for Scat Daddy, whose star is on the rise both on the track and in the sale ring.

He is the leading North American sire of two year-old winners this year and his progeny sold for up to $600,000 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale.
