Wesley Ward produced a slick winner for Champion 2YO Shanghai Bobby when Shangroyal (2c Shanghai Bobby x Mama Tia, by Carson City) broke the ice at Belmont on Saturday.
Fourth when making his debut on May 18, Shangroyal obviously took benefit from that outing.
Tardy from the gates, he quickly mustered speed to reach the front and after battling with the favourite National Flag was able to draw clear to take the five and a half furlong maiden by half a length.
Shangroyal becomes the second winner for Shanghai Bobby and was the second-most expensive yearling out of 64 Shanghai Bobbys sold in 2016 having fetched $400,000 at Keeneland September.
The son of Shanghai Bobby is a half-brother to Grade III winner Southern Honey and stakes-winner Call Thirty Seven being the sixth winner from Mama Tia.
