Talented mare Shotgun Gulch (4m Thunder Gulch x Rosieville, by Boston Harbour) scored a thrilling last to first win in the Grade I Vinery Madison Stakes at Keeneland on Thursday.
A winner of six races previously including a Listed victory and a Grade I third in the La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita, Shotgun Gulch owned, bred and trained by C.R.Trout, turned in a career best performance to win the seven furlong event on the all weather track by a head.
The Thunder Gulch filly trailed the nine-horse field well off the pace before making a five-wide move on the turn. Jockey Garrett Gomez positioned Shotgun Gulch in the middle of the track in early stretch. Once clear, the filly powerfully accelerated past the field, overtaking Amen Hallelujah in the final sixteenth of a mile for her first graded stakes victory.
“Turning for home, I thought I was going to run on by them,” Gomez revealed. “She started [taking the lead] a couple of times, and [Amen Hallelujah] fought back. Right towards the wire, my filly switched leads and was halfway looking around, but she ran really good. I had a good feeling in the post parade.”
“I’ve got a good team, and it was a team effort to get this filly here,” Trout said of registering his first Grade I victory. “She performed today.”
