Fifth in the Group I ATC Australian Derby, improving stayer Hippopus (3c High Chaparral x Straight Eight, by Danske) scored a resounding win in the Listed VRC St Leger at Flemington on Anzac Day.
The Gai Waterhouse trained three year-old was partnered by Craig Williams and sent out favourite for the 2800 metre staying test and emerged triumphant after powering clear to win by three lengths.
He travelled sweetly for Williams in third place after jumping from gate one and always looked to have the race in his keeping once he got clear running after turning for home.
“Once he got through he really showed his class,”said Williams.
“I was really impressed with the feel he gave me today. He’s very much a horse on the up.”
A $350,000 NZB Premier Yearling Sale purchase from the draft of Windsor Park Stud, Hippopus has been in work constantly since making his debut in November last year and has won four races and placed three times from 10 starts earning in excess of $220,000.
Hippopus is the best of three winners from stakes-placed Straight Eight, a half-sister to Group III winner The Big Bopper.
He is the 41st stakes-winner for High Chaparral, whose Australian fee for 2013 has been set at $77,000.
