It is hardly surprising that Galileo’s first four crops have produced a succession of Gr.1 and Classic winners and two champion two-year-olds, as he is an outstanding son of Sadler’s Wells and Urban Sea.
Although Galileo is a grandson of NORTHERN DANCER, much of his success has been with more Northern Dancer blood. The DANZIG branch merits considerable respect. Galileo sired the champion two-year-old Teofilo, the Italian Derby winner Cima de Triomphe and the 1,000 Guineas second Cuis Ghaire from daughters of DANEHILL, plus a Gr.3 winner from a mare by DESERT KING. Galileo’s triple Gr.1 winner Lush Lashes is out of a mare by ANABAA. DANZIG himself sired the second dams of the impressive Gr.3 winner Sub Rose and the Irish St Leger runner-up New Zealand.
Galileo is also proving an excellent mate for mares with NUREYEV. The Gr.2 winner Incanto Dream and the Gr.3 winner South Easter are two of his first six foals out of NUREYEV mares. The hugely talented Rip Van Winkle is out of a daughter of STRAVINSKY. Sadler’s Wells’ full-brother FAIRY KING sired the second dam of the Breeders’ Cup winner Red Rocks.
Galileo has also done well with the NIJINSKY branch. CAERLEON is the broodmare sire of the Gr.1 winner Allegretto, and GREEN DANCER sired the second dam of the Classic-placed Gr.3 winner Mahler.
He has an Australian Gr.1 winner out of a daughter of LAST TYCOON.
Mares by STORM CAT and his sons also come into the picture now that Galileo has sired the Gr.3 winner Galatee from a MOUNTAIN CAT mare. BLUEBIRD, another representative of the STORM BIRD male line, sired the second dam of the Classic-winning Nightime.
Galileo sired the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Nightime and the Gr.3 winner Oh Goodness Me from daughters of INDIAN RIDGE, whereas his Derby winner New Approach is out of a daughter of AHONOORA. The accomplished Rip Van Winkle has a second dam by DON’T FORGET ME.
In siring the St Leger winner Sixties Icon and the Australian Gr.2 winner Gallant Tess from DIESIS mares and the Listed winners Galactic Star and Paris Winds from KRIS mares, Galileo has shown his affinity for the SHARPEN UP line.
He is an attractive medium for inbreeding to the great MR PROSPECTOR. He sired the Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks from a daughter of MACHIAVELLIAN and the very promising Chabal from a ZAFONIC mare. The Gr.3 winner Leo’s Starlet is actually inbred 3x3 to Miswaki.
Alternatively, mares from other branches of the RAISE A NATIVE male line are worth trying. Galileo already has a Gr.2-winning son and a Gr.1 performer out of ALYSHEBA mares. MAJESTIC LIGHT, another Raise A Native line stallion, sired the second dam of Teofilo.
Mares by DARSHAAN produced eight Gr.1 winners and 19 Group winners to Sadler’s Wells. This cross has already produced three Group winners with Galileo, headed by the dual Gr.1 winner Alandi. Others include the 2,000 Guineas third Gan Amhras and the Irish St Leger runner-up New Zealand. The 2009 St Leger second Kite Wood is out of a mare by MARK OF ESTEEM. The second dams of Galileo’s stakes winners include daughters of SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, DOYOUN and MILL REEF. Never Bend’s grandson IRISH RIVER sired the second dam of the Gr.3 winner Galatee.
Galileo has sired the useful Galient from a WARNING mare and the St Leger second The Last Drop from a mare by Warning’s son CHARNWOOD FOREST.
The ROBERTO line is an automatic choice. Galileo has sired Group winners from daughters of KRIS S. and LEAR FAN, and Listed winners from mares by SILVER HAWK, RED RANSOM and SRI PEKAN.
RAINBOW QUEST is the broodmare sire of Galileo’s St Leger runner-up Mahler. Galileo also has two Listed winners out of a NASHWAN mare and Lush Lashes’ second dam is by ARAZI.
CARO’s son CRYSTAL PALACE sired the second dams of two of Galileo’s Gr.1 winners.
ALLEGED mares would also be suitable, as his son LAW SOCIETY sired the second dam of Sixties Icon.
Galileo got the Gr.3 winner Age of Aquarius from a TOP VILLE mare.
The BOLD RULER branch supplied several Group winners by Sadler’s Wells, and Galileo’s extremely classy two-year-old Cape Blanco, is out of a mare by General Assembly’s son PRESIDIUM.
