“A Royal Ascot victory adds lustre to any future stallion’s C.V., but Canford Cliffs now boasts three. These Royal Ascot wins came in the G2 Coventry S., G1 St James’s Palace S. & G1 Queen Anne S. – arguably the three races most likely to endear him to today’s breeders.” Andrew Caulfield, TDN, 21/06/11

He’s the best I’ve ever had.” Champion trainer, Richard Hannon

Canford Cliffs’ consistently outstanding record established him as a leader of his generation at two, three and four. Possessed of the precocious brilliance that so many yearling buyers look for, Canford Cliffs scored by a facile seven lengths on his debut in May and then quickened away to take the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes by six.

Canford Cliffs was much more than just a precocious talent, though. At three he reeled off Gr.1 victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace S. and Sussex S.  He extended the sequence of Gr.1 victories to five as a four-year-old, taking the Lockinge S. prior to using his brilliant acceleration to defeat the exceptional Goldikova in the Queen Anne S.  From the Hail To Reason male line and with a dam by Marju, Canford Cliffs is bred along similar lines to Big Bad Bob, who has done well from limited opportunities.

As a representative of the Hail To Reason male line, Canford Cliffs also possesses a pedigree which should make him a valuable outcross for many mares.

The GREEN DESERT branch of the DANZIG line has made a fast start with Canford Cliffs, reinforcing his juvenile ability. His sire Tagula sired the smart sprinter Tax Free from a grand-daughter of Green Desert and now Canford Cliffs has sired the Gr.3 winner Most Beautiful and the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes fourth Lady Clair from CAPE CROSS mares. Daughters of OASIS DREAM, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, KHELEYF, DESERT STYLE and DESERT PRINCE could all reinforce Canford Cliffs’ talent at up to a mile.

Canford Cliffs has already sired the French Listed winner Aktoria from a daughter of ZAFONIC and his first two Group winners have grand-daughters of MR PROSPECTOR as their second dams, by SEEKING THE GOLD and GULCH. Mares by MACHIAVELLIAN, another top two-year-old, should also reinforce Canford Cliffs’ strengths, as could those by ZAMINDAR, NAYEF, TAMAYUZ, MEDICEAN, DUTCH ART, KING’S BEST and DUBAWI. Canford Cliffs would also suit the SHARPEN UP line, which traditionally did well with the Hail To Reason line.

More Than Ready, Red Ransom and the Japanese stallions Sunday Silence, Stay Gold and Fuji Kiseki are among the other members of the Hail To Reason male line which have sired Gr.1 winners from DANEHILL mares. Canford Cliffs already has several winners out of daughters of DANEHILL DANCER, and he can continue to do well with this male line in general. He had a 240,000gns 2015 yearling with a dam by ROCK OF GIBRALTAR.

Sadler’s Wells line stallions have sired at least 40 Group winners from Hail To Reason line mares, with GALILEO being responsible for quite a few of them. Canford Cliffs’ status as a top two-year-old and classic miler means he has plenty to offer mares from the SADLER’S WELLS line. He has already sired the promising dual winner Storm Rising from a SADLER’S WELLS mare and an Ascot winner from a GALILEO mare. His sire’s very smart son Limato is out of a mare by SINGSPIEL.

KYLLACHY is the broodmare sire of Canford Cliffs’ Gr.2 winner Painted Cliffs. This suggests he could also suit daughters of PIVOTAL, EXCELLENT ART and CAPTAIN RIO.

The brothers EL GRAN SENOR and TRY MY BEST are an interesting option. Mares by Try My Best’s grandson ROYAL APPLAUSE are likely to reinforce Canford Cliffs’ juvenile ability, and the same applies to Royal Applause’s son ACCLAMATION.

A daughter of DARSHAAN produced a Gr.2 winner to Tagula. Canford Cliffs already has winners out of daughters of SHIRLEY HEIGHTS and DALAKHANI.

He already has several first-crop winners out of BAHAMIAN BOUNTY mares, including the dual winner Silhuette.
