The great looks to cost $900,000 as a yearling at Keeneland Sept. Book 1.

Won 6 races from 8 to 10 furlongs and over $1.6m

“This 3-year-old colt has serious ability” Blood-Horse

“Cupid delivered one of the most impressive Kentucky Derby prep performances of 2016 when he won the Rebel Stakes in March” DRF, June 2016

“Cupid is one of the best-bred 3-year-olds of this class”  Nicole Russo, DRF, April 2016

With his May 19 birthday, Cupid wasn’t likely to be at his best as a 2YO, but this $900,000 yearling made up for lost time as a sophomore, posting Gr.2 victories in the Rebel Stakes, Indiana Derby and West Virginia Derby. As a 4YO Cupid became a Gr.1 winner with a comfortable win in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita (108 Beyer Speed Figure).

His dam, Pretty ’n Smart, has four stakes winners to her credit including the speedy performers Ashley’s Kitty (Gr.3 over 7f.) and Heart Ashley (Gr.3 over 6f.) while her 2017 yearling (by TAPIT) sold for $2.7m. at Keeneland Sept.

Cupid’s sire Tapit has a 2YO Sires championship as well as three General Sires Championships and he owes 14 of his Graded stakes winners to mares from the MR PROSPECTOR line. Among the stallions involved were CARSON CITY, WOODMAN, GONE WEST and his sons GRAND SLAM, JOHAR and MR GREELEY, as well as FORTY NINER’s sons DISTORTED HUMOR and EDITOR’S NOTE. Mares by such as CITY ZIP, ELUSIVE QUALITY and SPEIGHTSTOWN should suit Cupid. Significantly, the fact that Tapit has a dam by UNBRIDLED hasn’t stopped him siring two Gr.2 winners from daughters of UNBRIDLED’S SONG, which are inbred 3×3 to UNBRIDLED. He also has the Gr.1 winner Ring Weekend inbred 4×3 to FAPPIANO.

Four of Tapit’s Graded winners (two Gr.1 winners) have second dams by ALYDAR.

Mares by seven different sons of STORM CAT supplied Graded winners for Tapit. Among them are GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, HENNESSY and FORESTRY. Mares by TALE OF THE CAT would be interesting, as they create a pedigree which features the sisters Preach (dam of Pulpit) and Yarn (dam of Tale of the Cat). Harlan’s sons HARLAN’S HOLIDAY and MENIFEE have daughters with Gr.2 winners by Tapit, so INTO MISCHIEF comes into the picture.

A notable aspect of Cupid’s pedigree is that his dam has the brothers Viceregal and Vice Regent in the third and second generations of her pedigree. VICE REGENT has played his part in Tapit’s success story, with his son DEPUTY MINISTER ranking as the broodmare sire of those top-class colts Tapizar and Frosted. Cupid could suit mares by DEPUTY MINISTER line stallions, such as DEHERE, AWESOME AGAIN and GHOSTZAPPER.

EL PRADO and his son MEDAGLIA D’ORO are among the broodmare sires of Tapit’s stakes winners, with the Gr.1 winner Laragh having an EL PRADO dam. SADLER’S WELLS sired the second dam of Gr.2 winner Lani.

Tapit is from the SEATTLE SLEW sire line and the great Triple Crown winner also appears in the pedigrees of several of his good winners. Gr.2 winner Dancing House and Gr.3 winner Touching Beauty are inbred 4×3 to SEATTLE SLEW and Gr.2 winner Concord Point is inbred 4×4, as is Frosted. With A.P. Indy back in the fourth generation of his foals, Cupid could be tried with mares by such as BERNARDINI, MALIBU MOON and MINESHAFT, which create 4×3 to A.P. Indy. The Gr.1 winner Sweet Loretta is inbred 3×4 to A.P. INDY (and 3×3 to UNBRIDLED).

Tapit has sired Gr.1 winners from mares by KRIS S. and his son PRIZED, the latter being the broodmare sire of Untapable. Tapwrit has a second dam by Roberto’s grandson HAWKSTER.

DIXIELAND BAND and DIXIE UNION are among the broodmare sires of Tapit’s Gr.2 winners.

PRIVATE ACCOUNT is the broodmare sire of Trappe Shot, while his son Privately Held is broodmare sire of Creator.

PLEASANT COLONY sired the dam of Tonalist, as well as the second dam of Zazu and Flashback.
