There is probably no stallion in Kentucky with a bigger international reputation than Danzig’s son War Front, whose progeny can shine on all surfaces and are equally at home in the U.S. and Europe. Declaration of War played a large part in this, underlining his class and versatility by defeating top milers in the Gr.1 Queen Anne S. and top middle-distance horses in the Gr.1 Juddmonte International. He then ran extremely well when a narrowly-beaten third in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, showing that he could produce his best form on dirt, as well as turf and all-weather.
Declaration of War also has the attraction of being out of a half-sister to Union Rags, a leading young sire. Another pointer to Declaration of War’s potential is that, like the 3-time champion sire Giant’s Causeway, Declaration of War is from the Northern Dancer male line and out of a daughter of Rahy.
Giant’s Causeway is exceptionally well suited by mares from the MR PROSPECTOR line, and War Front has also had plenty of success with this line, siring 12 Graded/Group winners. Declaration of War sired his first Group winner, the Irish filly Actress, from a daughter of GULCH. War Front sired The Factor from a MISWAKI mare and has other Gr.1 winners out of daughters of SMART STRIKE, WOODMAN and FORTY NINER. Mares by DISTORTED HUMOR create 3×4 to DANZIG with Declaration of War and are well worth trying.
The FAPPIANO branch is another compelling option, as War Front has three black-type winners from his first 20 foals out of UNBRIDLED’S SONG mares, as well as a Gr.2 winner from a GRINDSTONE mare. Other members of the FAPPIANO branch could suit Declaration of War.
The branches of the Mr Prospector line which have excelled with Giant’s Causeway include KINGMAMBO, SEEKING THE GOLD and Street Cry’s sire MACHIAVELLIAN.
The RAISE A NATIVE line also supplied War Front with champion 2YO Air Force Blue as his dam is by MARIA’S MON.
At least six other grandsons of Danzig have sired Gr.1 winners from STORM CAT line mares, including from daughters of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, HENNESSY and TALE OF THE CAT. Mares by SCAT DADDY would be a likeable option. Union Rags has sired Gr.1 winners from FOREST WILDCAT and STORM CAT mares.
War Front has sired Graded winners from mares by A.P. INDY and his son PULPIT, achieving an impressive 21 per cent black-type winners with daughters of PULPIT. BERNARDINI mares also hold plenty of appeal and daughters of TAPIT would be very interesting as they create distant duplications to Fappiano, Ruby Slippers and Nijinsky.
War Front has several good winners inbred 2×4 to DANZIG, including the Gr.1 winners War Flag, Hit It A Bomb and Brave Anna. Declaration of War’s Graded-placed son Irish Territory is inbred 3×4 to DANZIG.
With his Danzig blood, Declaration of War is a natural choice for mares by GALILEO. War Front has top-class 2yo winners out of SADLER’S WELLS, GALILEO and EL PRADO mares.
War Front sired Gr.1 2YO winner War Command from a mare by ROBERTO’s son RED RANSOM and he also has a Gr.1 winner out of a mare by Roberto’s grandson ARCH.
