The five days of Royal Ascot are like nothing I have ever experienced. It’s an occasion with the intensity of... View Article
Although the first runners by this champion sprinter did not reach the racecourse until the second half of 2008, Fastnet Rock has rapidly climbed to the top of the stallion ranks in Australia, ending the 2011/12 season as champion sire by a substantial margin. His fee of AUS$275,000 made him easily the highest-priced stallion in Australia in 2013. He has shown the versatility we have come to expect of Danehill’s best stallion sons, siring everything from Gr.1-winning sprinters to classic mile-and-a-half performers.
Fastnet Rock is working very well with the STORM CAT sire line and already has Australian Gr.1 winners out of mares by FOREST WILDCAT and HENNESSY. These Gr.1 winners are inbred to Storm Cat’s grandparents Northern Dancer and Crimson Saint. Mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY would be obvious contenders.
Inbreeding to DANZIG has already proven successful with Fastnet Rock. He has a Gr.3 winner and a Gr.1-placed performer inbred 3×3 to this great stallion. He also has another Gr.3 winner out of a mare by GREEN DESERT’s son VOLKSRAAD. Danehill Dancer, Rock of Gibraltar, Dansili, Holy Roman Emperor and Danetime are others who sired Group winners with GREEN DESERT in their pedigrees. His €420,000 2013 yearling out of a GREEN DESERT mare is inbred 3×3 to DANZIG.
Fastnet Rock is doing well with mares with more NORTHERN DANCER blood, especially via NUREYEV. For example, he has two Gr.1 winners out of PEINTRE CELEBRE mares and he sired the outstanding filly Mosheen from a STRAVINSKY mare. This mirrors the considerable success that the Danehill line has enjoyed with NUREYEV line mares in Europe. A 2013 yearling out of a PEINTRE CELEBRE mare sold for €350,000.
Fastnet Rock has Australian Stakes winners from mares by SADLER’S WELLS and GALILEO, plus a Gr.2 winner out of a grand-daughter of FAIRY KING. Yearlings out of SADLER’S WELLS mares sold for nearly €400,000 in 2013. Fastnet Rock should prove invaluable in injecting speed into daughters of GALILEO, HIGH CHAPARRAL and MONTJEU.
Fastnet Rock and Dansili are both by Danehill out of NIJINSKY line mares. A lot of Dansili’s good winners have two lines of NIJINSKY in their pedigrees. Nijinsky line stallions whose daughters have Group winners with sons of Danehill include CAERLEON, GREEN DANCER and KAHYASI. Fastnet Rock has Gr.1 and Gr.3 winners with NIGHT SHIFT second dams.
The BLUSHING GROOM line is also worth exploring. Fastnet Rock already has a Gr.1 winner with a NASHWAN second dam and a Gr.3 winner out of a MT LIVERMORE mare. Danehill sired Gr.1 winners from mares by BLUSHING GROOM and RAINBOW QUEST.
MR PROSPECTOR line mares have enjoyed consistent success with Danehill and his sons. Fastnet Rock has four stakes winners from 27 foals out of WOODMAN mares. He also has Gr.1 winners out of daughters of KINGMAMBO and LION CAVERN and a Gr.3 winner out of a JADE ROBBERY mare.
Danehill sired a Gr.1 winner from a ROBERTO mare, plus very smart performers from mares by three sons of ROBERTO. Fastnet Rock already has a Gr.1 winner with a ROBERTO second dam and a Gr.2 winner out of a grand-daughter of RED RANSOM.
Danehill had Gr.1 winners from mares with MILL REEF, SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, DARSHAAN, SIMPLY GREAT, RIVERMAN and IRISH RIVER in their pedigree, so the NEVER BEND line looks like another very attractive option for Fastnet Rock.
