The Aga Khan’s improving home-bred Karaktar (3c High Chaparral-Karawana, by King´s Best) put in a career-best performance in the Listed... View Article
High Chaparral is one of Sadler’s Wells’ eight Gr.1 winners out of daughters of Darshaan and the potency of his classic bloodlines is translating into first-rate results with his progeny. His offspring are proving effective over a wide range of distances, having won Group races over trips as short as seven furlongs and a mile in Europe and over six, seven and eight furlongs in Australia. He enjoyed Gr.1 success over a mile in 2013 with the top-class Toronado in Europe and with It’s A Dundeel and Shoot Out in Australia.
Many of High Chaparral’s Stakes horses are inbred 3×4 to NORTHERN DANCER, not necessarily through the mare’s sire line, and some have a third line to this great stallion.
He has a lot to offer mares from the DANZIG branch. He has sired the Gr.3 winners Above Average and Noll Wollop and the highly regarded Free Eagle from DANEHILL mares. He also has a Listed winner out of a DANEHILL DANCER mare.
His 18 foals out of GREEN DESERT mares include the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Wrote, the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile second Lady Darshaan, the Group-placed Gypsy Highway and the Listed winner Tempest Fugit. CAPE CROSS, a son of GREEN DESERT, is the broodmare sire of Gr.2 winner The Miniver Rose and Gr.1-placed 2yo Johann Strauss.
Nureyev features in the pedigrees of the multiple Gr.1 winner It’s A Dundeel, the dual Gr.1 winner Wigmore Hall, the Gr.1-placed fillies Beach Bunny and Lady Lupus and the smart French horse Petit Chevalier. The stallions involved include THEATRICAL, PEINTRE CELEBRE and PIVOTAL. The Oaks third High Heeled is out of a grand-daughter of FAIRY KING, and is therefore inbred 3×4 to Fairy Bridge.
The high-class Golden Sword is another inbred 3×4 to Northern Dancer, his second line coming via SALSE. Matings with mares by STORM BIRD’s fast son MUJADIL resulted in the accomplished French filly Joanna and the Group-placed Imperial Concorde. The NIJINSKY line is represented by Unsung Heroine, who is out of a grand-daughter of CAERLEON, and the outstanding international performer So You Think, who is out of a grand-daughter of NIJINSKY.
More MILL REEF blood works well. The Gr.1 runner-up Lady Darshaan has 3×3 inbreeding to DARSHAAN, while Gr.1 placed Magadan and three of his Listed winners have second dams by SHIRLEY HEIGHTS. Others with two lines of MILL REEF include the St Leger second Unsung Heroine and Australian Gr.1 winner Shoot Out. RIVERMAN and his son IRISH RIVER also feature among the sires of the second dams of his black-type horses, including the Gr.2 winner Joanna.
HIGHEST HONOR is the broodmare sire of the Gr.3 juvenile winner Serienhoehe and KENMARE figures as the broodmare sire of the Listed winner Le Larron.
The MR PROSPECTOR line is also shaping up encouragingly. His top-class miler Toronado is out of a mare by GONE WEST’s son GRAND SLAM. The Group winner Magadan is out of a MACHIAVELLIAN mare and the Gr.1 winner Redwood is out of a WOODMAN mare. He also has a Listed winner with a dam by KING’S BEST.
Although High Chaparral’s second dam is a top-class daughter of Kris he has Group performers inbred 4×3 to KRIS, including his Gr.1-winning son Wrote.
WARNING had a fine record with Sadler’s Wells mares, so it isn’t surprising that High Chaparral’s Italian 2,000 Guineas winner Senlis is out of a WARNING mare.
ROBERTO and his grandson SRI PEKAN figure among the sires of the second dams of High Chaparral’s good winners.
He is also suited by Germany’s SURUMU male line, siring the very smart stayer High Jinx from a SURUMU mare and the Gr.1 placed Araldo from a mare closely inbred to SURUMU. Surumu’s son ACATENANGO is the broodmare sire of two of his Listed winners and also sired the second dam of the Gr.3 winner Tai Chi.
