In a four-year career, Highland Reel’s name became synonymous with courage, soundness and top-grade ability. He was a Group winner in each of his seasons in training, starting with a decisive victory in the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes over seven furlongs at Goodwood as a 2YO. He was so talented and tough that he ultimately became a three-time Gr.1 winner in England, a two-time Gr.1 winner in the U.S. and also a Gr.1 winner twice in Hong Kong. Arguably his best performance was at Royal Ascot in 2017 when he easily accounted for the high-class trio of Ulysses, Decorated Knight and Queen’s Trust in the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes over 10 furlongs.

Highland Reel’s bloodlines are similarly impressive. A son of the incomparable Galileo, he is a brother to Gr.2 winner Idaho. Their dam, the Gr.2-placed Hveger, is a sister to Elvstroem, a five-time Gr.1 winner. This is also the family of champion sprinter Starspangledbanner, whose first European crops were a rich source of stakes winners.

Arguably the most attractive aspect of Highland Reel’s pedigree is that he represents the famous Galileo/Danehill nick which has produced 12 Gr.1 winners. Two of those Gr.1 winners – Teofilo and Frankel – are proving to be classic influences as stallions and their smart winners should provide valuable pointers to the bloodlines likely to suit Highland Reel.

An extra line of DANZIG is proving no problem for these sons of Danehill mares. Teofilo has sired Irish classic winners from daughters of SINNDAR and GRAND LODGE, and his successful sire son Havana Gold is out of a grand-daughter of GREEN DESERT. Teofilo also has Group winners out of daughters of GREEN DESERT, SHAADI and ZIETEN as well as several good winners out of mares by ANABAA. Frankel’s first crop contains stakes winners out of daughters of INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, OASIS DREAM and DANEHILL DANCER. Teofilo also has very useful winners inbred 3×3 to DANEHILL.

The Sadler’s Wells male line has always thrived with the SHIRLEY HEIGHTS line. Teofilo has excelled with MARK OF ESTEEM mares, siring Gr.1 winner Ajman Princess and Gr.2 winner Permian. He also has a Gr.3 winner with a dam by DASHING BLADE. Frankel has already sired Group winners from mares by DARSHAAN and DALAKHANI.

The MR PROSPECTOR line merits serious consideration. Frankel’s first crop contains two Group winners with dams by KINGMAMBO and Teofilo has two Gr.3 winners out of mares by DUBAI DESTINATION. He also sired the tough Fireglow from a KING’S BEST mare. MACHIAVELLIAN line mares are a highly attractive option, they have a Gr.1 winner by Teofilo and a Gr.2 winner by Frankel. There are also Frankel Group winners with dams by WOODMAN and VETTORI.

Inbreeding 3×3 to SADLER’S WELLS is becoming an attractive option with Galileo’s stallion sons. The outstanding Enable is inbred 3×2, and stallions bred on the Galileo-Danehill cross have stakes winners out of daughters of MONTJEU, HIGH CHAPARRAL and REFUSE TO BEND. Frankel also has two Group winners with second dams by SADLER’S WELLS, including the high-class Eminent.

Teofilo has stakes winners out of daughters of NUREYEV, POLAR FALCON and PEINTRE CELEBRE, while Frankel has sired the top-class Cracksman from a PIVOTAL mare and the unbeaten Goldrush from a GOLD AWAY mare. Daughters of PIVOTAL are a must for Highland Reel, in view of their remarkable record with Galileo.

Mares from the STORM CAT line have a terrific partnership with Galileo and this line demands trying with Highland Reel. Teofilo has a Gr.1 2yo winner out of a GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mare.

In view of Galileo’s excellent record with ROBERTO line mares, it is significant that Teofilo has two stakes winners with DR FONG dams and that Frankel sired the very smart Monarch’s Glen from a LEAR FAN mare, plus a Listed winner from a DYNAFORMER mare.

The BLUSHING GROOM line also has a lot to offer. Teofilo has a Gr.1 winner with a RAINBOW QUEST mare and a Gr.2 winner from a QUEST TO FAME mare, as well as a Gr.2 winner out of a daughter of GROOM DANCER. Both Teofilo and Frankel have Gr.2 winners with dams by RAHY.

Frankel’s champion Japanese filly Soul Stirring has a dam by MONSUN.
