Lookin At Lucky was a remarkable juvenile as he became the first horse in America in 22 years to win three Grade 1 races at 2 years, despite being a May 27 foal. He then went on to become the first colt in America to be an Eclipse Champion at both 2 & 3 years in 31 years. It is therefore no surprise that this 5-time Grade 1 winner was regarded by Bob Baffert as one of the greatest horses he ever trained. Lookin At Lucky’s pedigree is also of the highest quality as he is one of the very best sons of Smart Strike and is bred on a similar Mr. Prospector/Danzig cross to the leading sire Distorted Humor. He is now transferring his excellence to the role of stallion, ranking among the leading first-crop sires of 2014 and second-crop sires of 2015.
Lookin At Lucky is just one of several sons of Smart Strike with Graded stakes winners to their credit, others being Curlin, English Channel and Square Eddie.
With a son of Mr Prospector as his sire and a grand-daughter of Danzig as his dam, Lookin At Lucky is bred along similar lines to the highly successful stallion Distorted Humor (by another son of Mr Prospector out of a daughter of Danzig). Distorted Humor’s record suggests that Lookin At Lucky will be well suited by daughters and grand-daughters of SADLER’S WELLS. Distorted Humor has only 24 foals of racing age out of Sadler’s Wells mares but they feature the Gr.1 winners Cursory Glance, Pathfork and Aesop’s Fables. Distorted Humor’s Travers Stakes winner Flower Alley has a second dam by Sadler’s Wells and another of his Gr.1 winners, Bit of Whimsy, is out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells’s son EL PRADO. Smart Strike has also enjoyed Gr.1 success with Sadler’s Wells, via the filly Minorette. This suggests mares by EL PRADO, KITTEN’S JOY and MEDAGLIA D’ORO.
Judging by the record of the similarly-bred Distorted Humor, Lookin At Lucky will do well with mares from the SEATTLE SLEW line. Two of Distorted Humor’s best sons, Funny Cide and Any Given Saturday, are out of grand-daughters of SEATTLE SLEW, the latter being one of six Graded Stakes winners he has sired from mares by A.P. INDY. Distorted Humor’s Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer has a second dam by SLEW O’GOLD.
Lookin At Lucky has made a good start with this line, siring the Gr.2 winner Madefromlucky from a grand-daughter of A.P. Indy, by Pulpit, and the Gr.1-placed One Lucky Dane from a mare by BOSTON HARBOR. Aonther of Smart Strike’s sons, Curlin, sired the Gr.1 winner Stellar Wind from a MALIBU MOON mare, while Smart Strike sired the Gr.1 winners Centre Court and Crown Queen from A.P. INDY mares. Other sons of Smart Strike also have Graded winners out of daughters of SEATTLE SLEW, A.P. INDY, AVENUE OF FLAGS, VINDICATION and BOSTON HARBOR, a grandson of Seattle Slew.
Smart Strike had six stakes winners, headed by the outstanding Curlin and the smart Tenpins, from daughters of DEPUTY MINISTER. Remarkably, three of his sons – Curlin, English Channel and Square Eddie already have Gr.1 winners from this line, out of daughters of DEPUTY MINISTER, AWESOME AGAIN and TEN MOST WANTED. Lookin At Lucky promises to add to this success story, as he already has a stakes winner, Good Luck Gus, with a dam by DEPUTY MINISTER. Therefore mares by such as SALT LAKE, AWESOME AGAIN, DEHERE, FRENCH DEPUTY, TOUCH GOLD and SILVER DEPUTY are likely to suit Lookin At Lucky.
Lookin At Lucky is by Smart Strike, who sired the Breeders’ Cup Turf winner English Channel from a grand-daughter of NUREYEV, a close relative of Sadler’s Wells. Nureyev also sired the dam of one of Smart Strike’s Gr.2 winners and the second dam of one of his Gr.1 winners. Curlin, another son of Smart Strike, sired the Gr.1 winner Palace Malice from a NUREYEV line mare.
Lookin At Lucky merits serious consideration for mares from other branches of the Northern Dancer male line, especially the STORM BIRD and DEPUTY MINISTER branches. Smart Strike has four Graded stakes winners out of STORM CAT mares, including a Gr.1 winner, and Curlin has a Gr.2 winner with a Storm Cat dam and a Gr.3 winner with a dam by STORMY ATLANTIC. It is therefore no surprise that Lookin At Lucky’s first Graded winner, Lucky Player, has a dam by STORM CAT. Mares by champion sire GIANT’S CAUSEWAY are also likely to prove a good match for Lookin At Lucky, as this partnership has already produced the Gr.1-placed Maybellene.
Smart Strike has worked well with mares from the NIJINSKY line, notably siring the Japan Cup Dirt winner Fleetstreet Dancer from a Nijinsky mare. Distorted Humor’s Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer is out of a grand-daughter of Nijinsky. Lookin At Lucky has a Graded-placed stakes winner out of a SKY CLASSIC mare.
Smart Strike enjoyed considerable success with DANZIG line mares. He has Graded winners out of daughters of six different sons of Danzig, including BOUNDARY, DAYJUR and DANEHILL. There are a growing number of European Gr.1 winners with Danzig inbreeding and Lookin At Lucky would produce only 4×3 inbreeding with mares by Danzig’s sons.
The fact that Lookin At Lucky is a grandson of MR PROSPECTOR doesn’t rule him out for mares from this very successful line. Indeed his Gr.2 winner Madefromlucky is out of a mare inbred to MR PROSPECTOR. The FAPPIANO branch appeals, as one of his Graded stakes performers has a dam by UNBRIDLED’S SONG and another has a second dam by UNBRIDLED.
Smart Strike has several Graded winners from RIBOT line mares, three of them being out of daughters of PLEASANT COLONY.
Smart Strike also has three stakes winners out of Blushing Groom line mares, including the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Furthest Land, out of a RAHY mare. Another RAHY mare produced the Gr.2 winner Parranda to one of his sons.
