In establishing himself as arguably the world’s best stallion, Galileo owes a considerable debt to the descendants of another great stallion, Danzig. Roughly a quarter of his many Gr.1 winners are out of grand-daughters of Danzig, sired by four different sons, but easily the most influential has been Danehill, whose daughters have 11 Gr.1 winners including two in the U.S.  Galileo also struck gold with Absolutelyfabulous, a speedy mare by Danehill’s very fast son Mozart. Their son Magician possessed an admirable combination of speed and stamina. Fast enough to take the Irish 2,000 Guineas by more than three lengths, he later produced great acceleration to take the Breeders’ Cup Turf. In winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas Magician emulated his exceptional grandsire Sadler’s Wells.

The great thing about Magician from an American viewpoint is that he has very little Mr Prospector blood. The son of Raise A Native will be back in the fifth generation in the pedigrees of Magician’s foals and the likes of Storm Bird and Hail To Reason will be even further back. This means he has numerous options.

The STORM CAT branch of the Northern Dancer line is beginning to rival the success of the fabled Galileo-Danehill cross. Galileo now has six Group/Graded winners out of daughters of STORM CAT and four of them – Misty For Me, Marvellous, Gleneagles and Ballydoyle – are Gr.1 winners. Teofilo, another representative of the Galileo-Danehill cross, sired the Gr.1 2yo winner Loch Garman from a daughter of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY. As the classic winners Marvellous and Gleneagles are out of a sister to GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, this is an avenue demanding to be explored. There are numerous options, including daughters of HENNESSY, TALE OF THE CAT, STORMY ATLANTIC, FOREST WILDCAT and FORESTRY. HARLAN’S HOLIDAY mares are another option.

Galileo sired the Epsom Derby winner Ruler of the World and the 2015 Gr.2 2yo winner Port Douglas from daughters of KINGMAMBO, the Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks from a mare by MACHIAVELLIAN and the Irish St Leger winner Order of St George from a GONE WEST mare. Five of Galileo’s Group winners have second dams by MR PROSPECTOR, including the 2015 2yo Gr.1 winner Ballydoyle. Two other sons of Galileo have already sired Gr.1 winners from MR PROSPECTOR line mares. This suggests that Magician would suit mares by Mr Prospector’s many sons and grandsons, especially SPEIGHTSTOWN, DISTORTED HUMOR, STREET CRY and GRAND SLAM (whose daughters have already shone with another grandson of Sadler’s Wells).

Alternatively, the ALYDAR and EXCLUSIVE NATIVE branches of the RAISE A NATIVE male line are worth trying. ALYDAR sired the second dam of Galileo’s Derby winner Ruler of the World. MAJESTIC LIGHT sired the second dam of Galileo’s champion juvenile Teofilo.

The SEATTLE SLEW line also appears likely to suit Magician. Three other grandsons of Sadler’s Wells have already sired American Gr.1 winners from this line, namely Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty from an A.P. INDY mare, the Arlington Million winner Real Solution from a PULPIT mare and My Conquistadory from a MALIBU MOON mare.

Galileo’s success with the DANZIG line isn’t restricted to the Danehill branch. He has Gr.1 winners from daughters of three other sons of DANZIG, doing especially well with GREEN DESERT and ANABAA. Galileo sired the Oaks winner Was from a GREEN DESERT mare and the exceptional Derby winner Australia from a grand-daughter of Green Desert, by CAPE CROSS. Teofilo, another representative of the Galileo-Danehill cross, has five Group winners inbred to Danzig, two of them from the GREEN DESERT branch (including the American Gr.2 winner Amira’s Prince) and two from the CHIEF’S CROWN branch. This suggests that grand-daughters of Danzig have plenty to offer Magician, including mares by WAR FRONT, ANABAA, HARD SPUN, GREEN DESERT, EXCHANGE RATE (an interesting match), WAR CHANT, BELONG TO ME, BOUNDARY and LANGFUHR. These create only 5 x 3 to Danzig.

As Galileo’s son Teofilo sired his first Gr.1 winner from a daughter of Montjeu, creating 3×3 inbreeding to SADLER’S WELLS, Magician is an option for daughters of MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY, who create 3×4 to SADLER’S WELLS.

Galileo has also sired Group winners from daughters of NUREYEV, a three-parts-brother to Sadler’s Wells. Galileo’s brilliant son Rip Van Winkle is out of a grand-daughter of Nureyev, by STRAVINSKY. Galileo’s son New Approach sired the Epsom Oaks winner Talent from a grand-daughter of Nureyev. Magician is therefore a good option for mares by STRAVINSKY and THEATRICAL.

Other branches of the NEARCTIC line have to be considered, as another son of Galileo sired the champion juvenile and classic-winning miler Dawn Approach from a PHONE TRICK mare. Galileo also has two Gr.1 winners with an ICECAPADE second dam.

Galileo shines with the ROBERTO line, notably siring Gr.1 winners Nathaniel, Great Heavens and Seville from daughters of SILVER HAWK. He also sired Group winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER, KRIS S., LEAR FAN and RED RANSOM, plus Gr.1 winners from grand-daughters of RED RANSOM.

Galileo sired classic winner Sixties Icon from a DIESIS mare and DIESIS mares also have three stakes winners by Teofilo.

The BLUSHING GROOM and NEVER BEND branches of the Nasrullah male line have also done consistently well with Galileo in Europe and Teofilo also suits the BLUSHING GROOM line. Mares by RAHY and COZZENE could be interesting.
