Shanghai Bobby was the undisputed 2YO champion of 2012, topping the Experimental Free H. by a margin of 3lbs. In the Eclipse Award voting, Shanghai Bobby received 253 of the 254 votes, thanks to five victories from five starts from April to November including the Gr.2 Hopeful S. and Gr.1 victories in the Champagne S. and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Harlan’s Holiday was 2012’s champion sire of 2YO’s, a title taken by his son Into Mischief in 2016.

Goldencents, the first Gr.1 winner by a son of Harlan’s Holiday, is out of a grand-daughter of FORTY NINER and so is Practical Joke, Into Mischief’s other Gr.1 winner. Harlan’s Holiday sired the very smart Mendip from a mare by CORONADO’S QUEST. Daughters of DISTORTED HUMOR, broodmare sire of Practical Joke, are therefore highly likely to suit Shanghai Bobby. Majesticperfection’s top-class daughter Lovely Maria has a dam by THUNDER GULCH.

Harlan’s Holiday has shone with FAPPIANO’s line siring Graded winners from mares by UNBRIDLED, UNBRIDLED’S SONG, RED BULLET and EMPIRE MAKER. He also has a fine record with mares by VICTORY GALLOP. Shanghai Bobby has already sired the Stakes winner Gotta Go from an UNBRIDLED’S SONG mare. Other branches of the Mr Prospector line which have suited Harlan’s Holiday include GONE WEST (Gr.2 winner Willcox Inn), SEEKING THE GOLD (Gr.2 winner Annual Report) and KINGMAMBO (Gr.3 winner General Election). Gone West’s sons should suit Shanghai Bobby, including ELUSIVE QUALITY, SPEIGHTSTOWN, GRAND SLAM and MR GREELEY (broodmare sire of 2 Graded winners by Harlan’s Holiday). A GRAND SLAM mare produced Into Mischief’s Gr.3 winner Strict Compliance. Another son of Harlan’s Holiday has a Gr.2 winner from a LEMON DROP KID mare.

Another from the RAISE A NATIVE line has supplied Harlan’s Holiday with some good winners. Majesticperfection has a dam by WAVERING MONARCH, while the good Canadian 2YO Bear Holiday is out of a MARIA’S MON mare.

SEATTLE SLEW line mares supplied Harlan’s Holiday with several Graded stakes performers, with Graded winners out of daughters of DONERAILE COURT, SLEW CITY SLEW and PULPIT. There is also a Gr.2 performer out of a TAPIT mare, so Shanghai Bobby could work well with the A.P. INDY branch.

Harlan’s Holiday has Graded winners out of mares by Roberto’s sons SILVER HAWK and DYNAFORMER and grandson ARCH. SAINT BALLADO mares also appeal.

Another son of Harlan’s Holiday has a Gr.3 winner out of a DANZIG mare. Shanghai Bobby should suit mares by Danzig’s fast sons, such as WAR FRONT, BELONG TO ME, BOUNDARY, LANGFUHR and DAYJUR.

Harlan’s Holiday has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners out of DEPUTY MINISTER mares and one of Shanghai Bobby’s first-crop black-type winners has a dam by Deputy Minister’s son DEFRERE. This also opens the door to the likes of AWESOME AGAIN, DEHERE, FRENCH DEPUTY, SILVER DEPUTY and TOUCH GOLD.

Shanghai Bobby’s early winners include March X Press, a black-type winner out of an INDIAN CHARLIE mare. This suggests that he will suit daughters of UNCLE MO.

Into Mischief sired the Gr.2 winner Vyjack from a mare by Nureyev’s son STRAVINSKY.

DIXIELAND BAND sired the dam of the Gr.2 winner Conquest Harlanate by Harlan’s Holiday.

Breeders may also consider inbreeding to STORM CAT through Shanghai Bobby, as this could reinforce his excellent 2YO ability. He already has a black-type performer with a dam by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY.
