In winning the Gr.2 Jim Dandy S. and Gr.1 Travers S., Stay Thirsty emulated his sire Bernardini. He was also well above average at two, when he won over six furlongs at Saratoga and was second in the Gr.1 Hopeful S., earning 114 on the Experimental Free Handicap. At three he also won the Gr.3 Gotham S. and was a close second in the Belmont S.  He showed that he had retained his form at four when narrowly beaten in the Gr.1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

He also has a Gr.1 pedigree. Like the sensational Tapit, he is a grandson of A.P. Indy and his sire Bernardini ranks as one of America’s highest-priced stallions. Stay Thirsty is also a half-brother to two colts with Gr.1 ability, including the Belmont S. runner-up Andromeda’s Hero. The Travers S. winner Golden Ticket is another member of this family and Stay Thirsty’s fifth dam Equal Venture was a sister to Assault, the Triple Crown winner of 1946.

He shares some of the same bloodlines – Fappiano and Storm Bird – as Birdstone, a stallion whose first crop produced winners of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Mr Prospector will be well back on Stay Thirsty’s side of his foals’ pedigrees, allowing the MR PROSPECTOR line to be one of the first lines of attack. Bernardini has the magnificent record of 29% Graded winners with CARSON CITY mares, with the Gr.1 winners Cavorting and A Z Warrior among the four Graded winners. He also has a Gr.1 winner out of a WOODMAN mare, a Gr.2 winner out of a KINGMAMBO mare and a Gr.1-placed daughter with a SEEKING THE GOLD dam. This puts daughters of GONE WEST, GULCH, MISWAKI and SMART STRIKE into the picture, especially as a SMART STRIKE mare produced Mine That Bird to Birdstone. There are also numerous grandsons of Mr Prospector whose daughters will suit, including CITY ZIP, DISTORTED HUMOR, ELUSIVE QUALITY, GRAND SLAM, MR GREELEY, SPEIGHTSTOWN, THUNDER GULCH (who creates 3×4 to Storm Bird) and STREET CRY. It was a DISTORTED HUMOR mare which produced the Florida Derby winner Constitution to Tapit.

Bernardini also has Graded winners inbred to FAPPIANO, including the 2015 2yo Gr.1 winner Greenpointcrusdaer (inbred 4×3). Another grandson of A.P. Indy has sired Gr.1 winners from mares by UNBRIDLED and UNBRIDLED’S SONG. Stay Thirsty’s numerous options from this branch include daughters of UNBRIDLED’S SONG, CANDY RIDE, EMPIRE MAKER and BROKEN VOW. He has a $250,000 yearling out of an UNBRIDLED’S SONG mare. BIRDSTONE mares would be interesting, creating 3×4 to Storm Bird, who appears twice in the pedigree of Birdstone’s top son Summer Bird.

As Summer Bird was inbred 3×3 to STORM BIRD, the STORM CAT line has to be an option for STAY THIRSTY. STORM CAT mares produce 3×3 to STORM BIRD, but grand-daughters of STORM CAT are probably a better option. Another grandson of A.P. Indy has Gr.1 winners out of mares by three different sons of Storm Cat. GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, TALE OF THE CAT, FOREST WILDCAT, HENNESSY, FORESTRY, TABASCO CAT and STORMY ATLANTIC (who also creates 4×4 to Seattle Slew) are just some of the stallions who could suit. Bernardini has a Gr.2 winner out of a TALE OF THE CAT mare and a Gr.1-placed colt out of a HARLAN mare. Mares by SCAT DADDY, JOHANNESBURG and HARLAN’S HOLIDAY could reinforce Stay Thirsty’s juvenile ability.

It was a DEPUTY MINISTER mare which produced the Gr.1 winners To Honor And Serve and Angela Renee to Bernardini. Three grandsons of A.P. Indy have Graded winners from this line, including a Gr.1 winners out of DEPUTY MINISTER and DEHERE mares. Daughters of AWESOME AGAIN, SILVER DEPUTY and TOUCH GOLD are other options.

Daughters of EL PRADO, MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY are possibilities, as Bernardini sired the 2015 Gr.1 2yo winner Rachel’s Valentina from Medaglia d’Oro’s top daughter Rachel Alkexandra. Also, another grandson of A.P. Indy has a Gr.1 winner out of an EL PRADO mare.

ROBERTO will be back in the fourth generation of Stay Thirsty’s foals, so he has plenty of scope for mares with HAIL TO REASON blood, such as daughters of DEVIL’S BAG, SAINT BALLADO and MORE THAN READY. Stay Thirsty has a $200,000 yearling with a dam by MORE THAN READY and a $170,000 colt with a dam by SAINT BALLADO. Daughters of DYNAFORMER and RED RANSOM – both of whom have Gr.1 winners by sons of A.P. Indy – create 4×3 to ROBERTO.

Two sons of A.P. Indy have Gr.1 winners out of RAHY mares. Other options from the BLUSHING GROOM line are daughters of MT LIVERMORE and CHEROKEE RUN. Stay Thirsty has a $200,000 yearling with a dam by PEAKS AND VALLEYS, a son of MT LIVERMORE.

PLEASANT COLONY mares have produced Graded winners to three generations of the A.P. Indy male line, including the top-class Tonalist to Tapit.
