In winning the Gr.2 Jim Dandy S. and Gr.1 Travers S., Stay Thirsty emulated his sire Bernardini. He was also well above average at two, when he won over six furlongs at Saratoga and was second in the Gr.1 Hopeful S., earning 114 on the Experimental Free Handicap. He is passing on this juvenile ability, with 12 winners before the end of September, including Thirstforlife and Jocker Justice. At three he also won the Gr.3 Gotham S. and was a close second in the Belmont S. He showed that he had retained his form at four when beating Groupie Doll to land the Gr.1 Cigar Mile.

Like the sensational Tapit, he’s a grandson of A.P. Indy and his sire Bernardini is one of America’s top stallions. Stay Thirsty is also a half-brother to two colts with Gr.1 ability. Travers S. winner Golden Ticket is another member of this family and Stay Thirsty’s fifth dam Equal Venture was a sister to Triple Crown winner Assault.

He shares some of the same bloodlines – Fappiano and Storm Bird – as Birdstone, a stallion whose first crop produced winners of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Mr Prospector will be well back in Stay Thirsty’s foals. Bernardini has the magnificent record of 31% SW’s with CARSON CITY mares, with the Gr.1 winners Cavorting and A Z Warrior. Stay Thirsty already has a talented winner out of a CARSON CITY mare.

Bernardini also has a Gr.1 winner out of a WOODMAN mare, a Gr.2 winner out of a KINGMAMBO mare and a Gr.3 winner with a SEEKING THE GOLD dam. A SMART STRIKE mare produced Mine That Bird to Birdstone. It was a DISTORTED HUMOR mare which produced the Florida Derby winner Constitution to Tapit.

Bernardini also has Graded winners inbred to FAPPIANO, including the Gr.1 2yo winner Greenpointcrusader (inbred 4×3). Stay Thirsty has already sired his first stakes winner and an allowance winner from UNBRIDLED’S SONG mares. BIRDSTONE mares would be interesting, creating 3×4 to Storm Bird, who appears twice in the pedigree of Birdstone’s top son Summer Bird.

Bernardini has six foals out of SUMMER SQUALL mares, which produces 3×3 to Weekend Surprise. They include Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners and a Gr.2-placed colt, so mares with WEEKEND SURPRISE blood are well worth trying.

As Summer Bird was inbred 3×3 to STORM BIRD, the STORM CAT line has to be an option for STAY THIRSTY. Bernardini has a Gr.2 winner out of a TALE OF THE CAT mare and a Gr.1-placed colt out of a HARLAN mare. Mares by SCAT DADDY, JOHANNESBURG and HARLAN’S HOLIDAY will reinforce Stay Thirsty’s 2yo ability.

It was a DEPUTY MINISTER mare which produced the Gr.1 winners To Honor And Serve and Angela Renee to Bernardini. Three grandsons of A.P. Indy have Graded winners from this line, including Gr.1 winners out of DEPUTY MINISTER and DEHERE mares. Daughters of AWESOME AGAIN, SILVER DEPUTY and TOUCH GOLD are other options. He has a $260,000 second-crop yearling with a dam by TOUCH GOLD.

Bernardini sired the Gr.1 2yo winner Rachel’s Valentina from a MEDAGLIA D’ORO mare. Another grandson of A.P. Indy has a Gr.1 winner out of an EL PRADO mare.

Stay Thirsty has plenty of scope for mares with HAIL TO REASON blood. Daughters of DYNAFORMER and RED RANSOM – both of whom have Gr.1 winners by sons of A.P. Indy – create 4×3 to ROBERTO.

Two sons of A.P. Indy have Gr.1 winners out of RAHY mares. Other options from the BLUSHING GROOM line are daughters of MT LIVERMORE and CHEROKEE RUN.

PLEASANT COLONY mares have produced Graded winners to three generations of the A.P. Indy male line, including the top-class Tonalist to Tapit.
