Dual Gr.1 winning miler.

Fee for 2018: €25,000

Dual Gr.1 winning miler by sire of sires GALILEO.

Out of a Group winning 2yo by DANEHILL DANCER.

From the family of Champion sire GREEN DANCER.

One of the fastest Sussex Stakes winners in recent years, quicker than SOLOW, KINGMAN and both of FRANKEL’s wins.

The Gurkha’s impressive win in Sunday’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains upheld the rich tradition in the race of his extended family. Out of [2YO] Group 3 winner Chintz, The Gurkha is a direct descendant of Green Valley, dam of the 1975 winner Green Dancer, and from the further family of Grey Dawn, who was placed in the 1965 renewal. Source: Nancy Sexton, Racing Post 19th May 2016

One of the most striking features of recent seasons has been the emergence of three top-class performers representing Galileo’s partnership with daughters of another champion sire, Danehill Dancer. Between them Minding, The Gurkha and Alice Springs collected the remarkable total of 12 Gr.1 victories. The Gurkha’s contribution included winning the Poule d’Essai des Poulains by five and a half lengths before defeating a stellar field in the Sussex Stakes. He was also a close second in the Gr.1 Eclipse S. over a mile and a quarter.

The Gurkha also comes from a top-class female line, as his first three dams were stakes winners and his fourth dam is Vallee Dansante, who numbers winners of the Derby, Arc, Prix Marcel Boussac and Grand Criterium among her descendants. Vallee Dansante also has a distinguished half-brother in the champion stallion Green Dancer, who also won the Poule d’Essai des Poulains.

There must be some valuable clues to be found among the best winners sired by Galileo’s stallion sons out of mares by Danehill, including Teofilo and Frankel.

Although Teofilo has a dam by Danehill, he has plenty of good winners with a second line of DANZIG. Among them are Gr.1 winner Havana Gold (dam by DESERT STYLE), the Gr.2 winners Amira’s Prince (dam by GREEN DESERT) and Diplomat (dam by SHAADI) and the Gr.3-winning brothers Scottish and Royal Empire (dam by ZIETEN). Mares by ANABAA must be considered in view of their success with Galileo and the promise they have shown with Teofilo.

The Gurkha has plenty of options with mares from the other DANZIG lines. Galileo has sired an Oaks winner from a GREEN DESERT mare and the dual Derby winner Australia from a daughter of CAPE CROSS, so these merit a chance with The Gurkha, as do daughters of INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, OASIS DREAM and SEA THE STARS. Both Teofilo and Frankel have Listed winners out of OASIS DREAM mares and Frankel has another with a dam by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.

Mares by the likes of ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, FASTNET ROCK, DANSILI, EXCEED AND EXCEL, KODIAC, MOZART, DYLAN THOMAS and DUKE OF MARMALADE create an acceptable 4×3 to DANEHILL. Teofilo also has stakes winners inbred 3×2 and 3×3 to DANEHILL.

The GRAND LODGE branch of the Danzig male line supplied Teofilo with Gr.1 winners Voleuse de Coeurs (dam by GRAND LODGE) and Trading Leather (dam by SINNDAR).

The BLUSHING GROOM line is playing an important roll in Teofilo’s career and has made a promising start with Frankel. Teofilo has Group winners out of daughters of RAINBOW QUEST (Gr.1 winner Quest For More), GROOM DANCER (Oaks second Tarfasha) and RAHY (Gr.2 winner Arod) and there’s also a Gr.2 winner with a dam by QUEST FOR FAME. Frankel’s Gr.2 Lowther Stakes winner Queen Kindly is another with a dam by RAHY and his smart daughter Fair Eva has a QUEST FOR FAME second dam. Frankel’s Gr.2 winner Finche is inbred 4×3 to RAINBOW QUEST.

A branch of the Northern Dancer line enjoying repeated classic success with Galileo is the one represented by STORM CAT. Galileo now has ten Group/Graded winners from daughters of STORM CAT (20 per cent) and eight of them – Churchill, Gleneagles, Ballydoyle, Misty For Me, Marvellous, Decorated Knight, Happily and Clemmie – are Gr.1 winners. Teofilo sired a Gr.1 winner from a daughter of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY. As Marvellous, Gleneagles and Happily are out of a sister to GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, this is an avenue well worth exploring with The Gurkha. Daughters of FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND and SHAMARDAL should suit.

Inbreeding to SADLER’S WELLS cannot be ruled out, as three of Galileo’s sons with dams by Danehill have sired Group winners inbred 3×3. Another son of Galileo sired the brilliant Enable, who is inbred 3×2. Daughters of HIGH CHAPARRAL and MONTJEU should suit. Galileo has also had very good results with the NUREYEV line, siring three Gr.1 winners from PIVOTAL mares. Frankel has also made a bright start with PIVOTAL mares, siring the top-class Cracksman. New Approach sired the Oaks winner Talent from a PEINTRE CELEBRE mare and Teofilo has a Gr.3 winner with a PEINTRE CELEBRE dam. Galileo also has Gr.1 winners out of THEATRICAL and STRAVINSKY mares.

Although he is out of a Miswaki mare, Galileo has enjoyed widespread success with other MR PROSPECTOR line mares, notably siring Gr.1 winners from daughters of MACHIAVELLIAN, KINGMAMBO (2) and GONE WEST. Sons of Galileo have Group winners with dams by KINGMAMBO (2), WOODMAN, HAWK WING, MACHIAVELLIAN (3), ZAFONIC, THUNDER GULCH, OBSERVATORY, VETTORI, DUBAWI and DUBAI DESTINATION (3). Daughters of KING’S BEST and ZAMINDAR also have stakes winners by sons of Galileo.

Galileo is excelling with the ROBERTO line, notably siring the Gr.1 wiunners Nathaniel, Great Heavens and Seville from daughters of SILVER HAWK. He has also sired Group winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER, KRIS S.LEAR FAN, RED RANSOM, DR FONG, SRI PEKAN and INTIKHAB. His partnership with INTIKHAB is proving tremendously effective, with four Group winners from nine foals, including outstanding Arc winner Found.

Frankel and Teofilo have both shown plenty of potential with SHIRLEY HEIGHTS line mares. Teofilo sired the Gr.1 winner Ajman Princess and the Gr.2 winner Permian from MARK OF ESTEEM mares, and Frankel has Group winners out of daughters of DARSHAAN and DALAKHANI.

The Gurkha is likely to suit mares with AHONOORA blood. Galileo’s classic winners New Approach and Was respectively have a dam and a second dam by this top sprinter. Galileo also has three Group winners, including a classic winner, from mares by INDIAN RIDGE, and Teofilo has a Gr.3 winner. Galileo also sired the Gr.1 winner Curvy from an INCHINOR mare.

Two sons of Galileo have Group winners out of ACCLAMATION mares.

Frankel has a Gr.3 winner out of a LINAMIX mare. LINAMIX mares produced two Group winners to Danehill Dancer.

TEOFILO has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners out of daughters of DIESIS.
