October 29, 2013

Verrazano established himself among the best 3yos of 2013 with four Graded stakes victories, including the Gr.1 Wood Memorial S. and Gr.1 Haskell Invitational. He took the latter by nearly 10 lengths, improving his record to six wins in his first seven starts. He posted a 116 Beyer. Transferred to Europe as a 4yo, Verrazano again showed his class when a close second in the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Verrazano’s fifth dam is the Epsom Oaks winner Monade, whose rich legacy includes more than 25 Group/Graded winners, headed by Gr.1 winners by such as Mr Prospector, Danzig, Seattle Slew and Blushing Groom. He is inbred 4×3 to Mr Prospector and also has two lines to two other exceptional stallions in Northern Dancer and Blushing Groom.

Verrazano’s dam Enchanted Rock produced the Gr.2 winner El Padrino to PULPIT and his family has also produced a Gr.1 winner to SEATTLE SLEW, Graded winners to A.P. INDY, CAPOTE and MINESHAFT and a Listed winner to TAPIT. Verrazano’s sire MORE THAN READY also sired the dual Gr.2 winner Hungry Island from an A.P. INDY mare from this family, plus the Ashland S. and merican Oaks winner Room Service from a mare by A.P. Indy’s son OLD TRIESTE. Mares by other sons of A.P. INDY, such as BERNARDINI and STEPHEN GOT EVEN, are other possibilities, as are mares by Pulpit’s excellent son TAPIT.

As Verrazano’s two lines of MR PROSPECTOR will be well back in his foals’ pedigrees, there is plenty of scope for other lines. More Than Ready’s Gr.1 Champagne Stakes winner Daredevil is out of a mare by FORTY NINER, while his 2016 2yo Gr.2 winner Boynton has a dam by DISTORTED HUMOR. More Than Ready also has a 2016 2yo Gr.2 winner, Made You Look, and the 2016 Gr.3 winner Life Imitates Art out of daughters of UNBRIDLED’S SONG. The GONE WEST branch also suits More Than Ready, as he has Graded/Group winners out of daughters of CAME HOME, MR GREELEY and ZAFONIC.

More Than Ready, with his two lines to Almahmoud, has been considered a natural match in Australia for mares by DANEHILL, who is closely inbred to Almahmoud’s daughter Natalma. This has paid big dividends, producing five Gr.1 winners. Mares by DANEHILL therefore have plenty to offer Verrazano. More Than Ready also sired Graded/Group winners from mares by PINE BLUFF, REDOUTE’S CHOICE, LURE and WAR CHANT, plus a Gr.3 winner from a daughter of DANEHILL DANCER. Mares by other sons of DANZIG, such as WAR FRONT, BELONG TO ME, EXCHANGE RATE and LANGFUHR, are possibilities.

The SADLER’S WELLS line merits plenty of respect, as Verrazano’s family has produced the Gr.2 winner Al Khali to MEDAGLIA D’ORO. More Than Ready sired the very speedy Regally Ready and the Breeders’ Cup winner Pluck from grand-daughters of SADLER’S WELLS, so daughters of EL PRADO and KITTEN’S JOY also come into the picture.

More Than Ready has done well with mares by sons of DEPUTY MINISTER, including DEHERE (Gr.2 winner More Than Real), FRENCH DEPUTY and SALT LAKE (Gr.1-placed Mata Karanjang). Deputy Minister sired the second dam of 2016 Gr.2 winner Tom’s Ready. Mares by AWESOME AGAIN and SILVER DEPUTY are other options.

All four of More Than Ready’s foals out of INDIAN CHARLIE mares are winners, including the Gr.2-placed Galientos.

More HAIL TO REASON blood ought to suit Verrazano, an obvious route being sons of ROBERTO, including DYNAFORMER, LEAR FAN, RED RANSOM and SILVER HAWK. Mares with SUNDAY SILENCE blood would be interesting, as More Than Ready sired the top Australian mare More Joyous from one of his daughters.
