Set to serve his first season at Ashford Stud next year, top class performer Stay Thirsty (4h Bernardini x Marozia, by Storm Bird) ended his career with a memorable victory in the Grade I Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on the weekend.
Stay Thirsty made a sustained late charge for Ramon Dominguez to challenge race favourite Groupie Doll in a thrilling battle, persisting right to the wire to win the one mile contest in the last stride.
“I wasn’t sure; I thought we got a good bob, but I still wasn’t 100 percent sure,” said winning trainer Todd Pletcher.
“He’s been a good horse every day that we’ve had him; he was successful at two and won races like the Jim Dandy (Grade II) and Travers (Grade I) at three, and the breeders love milers. He proved today he can be versatile enough to do all of those things. It was a huge win for him.”
Stay Thirsty has the overall record of five wins and six placings from 17 starts with prizemoney of $1.9 million.
Stay Thirsty will stand in 2013 at a fee of $20,000.
