Promising colt Monzon (3c Thunder Gulch x Shadow of Mine, by Belong to Me) provided Sagamore Farm with their first homebred stakes-winner when he took out the Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct.
From the stable of Ignacio Correas IV, Monzon improved from a close third at his previous run in stakes company to power home from back in the field for a convincing win in the 1mile and 70 yards event.
Monzon has been mixing his surfaces of late running on turf after breaking his maiden with a facile 12 ½ length win back in August at Laurel and seemed to appreciate getting back to the dirt.
“We were eventually going to come back to the dirt with him,” Correa said.
“We took the blinkers off to try and relax him. The plan was that if he ran well in the
Count Fleet, we’d look ahead to the Whirlaway [at Aqueduct Feb. 5], which is what we will probably do.
“He’s still a little green and has things to learn. We don’t know his limit yet. But we can dream, which is good.”
Bred by Kevin Plank’s Sagamore Farm, Monzon has won two of five starts and is the first stakes-winner for Shadow of Mine, a winning half-sister to stakes-winners Keys to the Heart, Avie’s Shadow and Nastassja.
