UAE Derby Winner for Scat Daddy

US based Scat Daddy featured at the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan on Saturday where exciting prospect Daddy Long Legs (3c Scat Daddy x Dreamy Maiden, by Meadowlake) gave champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien a win in the Grade II UAE Derby.

Daddy Long Legs was ridden to victory by Colm O’Donoghue, stalking the leader Helmet for much of the race before dashing past that colt at the top of the straight.

He then powered to the line to win by a length and a quarter from Yang Tse Kiang with his stablemate Wrote (3c High Chaparral x Desert Classic, by Green Desert), winner of the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last year, back in third place.

After the race, Aidan O’Brien revealed that Daddy Long Legs might be headed towards the Grade I Kentucky Derby on May 5.

“Obviously we would have to think about that,” O’Brien said. “He’s American-bred, he’s by Scat Daddy who tend to be all about speed, but the way he has matured physically I think he will get the trip.

“That was the plan, to come here with the two of them and then see if we had a Kentucky Derby contender. The lads (Coolmore) will speak about it but you’d be looking that way with him at the moment.”

A $100,000 purchase from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale, Daddy Long Legs runs for Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier and has won three races from five starts including a victory in the Grade II Newmarket Royal Lodge Stakes in the UK last year.

He is a half-brother to stakes-winner Tres Dream and is one of six winners from the stakes-winning Meadowlake mare Dreamy Maiden.
