US Grade One Winner for Scat Daddy

Improving filly Nickname (2f Scat Daddy x Nina Fever, by Borrego) became the latest Grade I winner for her red hot sire Scat Daddy when capturing the $400,000 Frizette Stakes at Belmont on Saturday.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Nickname was fourth on debut to subsequent Grade I winner Rachel’s Valentina and then broke her maiden in good style on September 2.

Nickname powered to the line in this one mile assignment for Javier Castellano to win by three and a half lengths.

“I tried to find my best shot, do the best thing for the horse and find the best way to get there,” said Javier Castellano.

“I knew they went pretty quick and then picked it up. I didn’t want to keep pushing and get caught in the pace. At the same time, I could see those two horses on the outside too [Width and Nemoralia], so I had to move a little bit. She did really well, nice horse.”

A $350,000 Keeneland September purchase, Nickname runs for LNJ Foxwoods and will now look to run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Nickname is the first winner for stakes-placed Nina Fever, a grand-daughter of Group I winner Good Potential.

She is the 58th stakes-winner for Scat Daddy and is his 15th Group I winner.

Scat Daddy is the leading North American 2YO Sire this year, just heading his Ashford barn mate Uncle Mo.
