“Very, very good” son of Vinnie Roe stars in Newbury sale ring

Trainer Peter Bowen could not hide his relief at being able to get five-year-old Regal Diamond (5g Vinnie Roe-Paper Money, by Supreme Leader) back for £70,000 at the DBS Newbury Sale on Saturday evening.

Bowen saddled the Vinnie Roe gelding to finish fourth in a Doncaster bumper on his only start before being sent to the sales by his owner and he returns to the Haverfordwest handler in the ownership of Roddy Owen and Paul Fullagar. A trip to Aintree for the G2 Champion Bumper could be next on the agenda.

“He is a smashing horse – very, very good,” Bowen told racingpost.com. “He will probably be aimed at the Aintree bumper and although he will go through soft ground, I think he will be a much better horse on better ground.”

Regal Diamond was selling a week after the Rebecca Curtis-trained Bob Ford (6g Vinnie Roe-Polar Lamb, by Brush Aside) had beaten his only remaining rival by a staggering 131 lengths in a Ffos Las novices’ hurdle.

The six-year-old, a winning pointer bred by Lorcan Allen, is now from two from two over hurdles and connections predict a big future.

“Bob Ford will appreciate better ground but he handled the conditions better than the others. He is going to make a lovely chaser as he jumps fences well,” said Curtis’s partner Gearoid Costelloe.
