Progressive colt War Academy (3c Giant’s Causeway x Cabbage Key, by AP Indy) will be pointed towards the Kentucky Derby following another impressive win at Santa Anita.
The Bob Baffert trained colt cruised home to win the 1 and 1/16th mile allowance by three and a half lengths and has now won two of three starts, his lone defeat coming when fourth in the Grade II San Vincente Stakes in February.
Baffert noted after the race that War Academy would be progressing towards the Grade I Kentucky Derby.
“He’ll hit one of the big preps,” Baffert confirmed.
“I don’t know where yet, but it’ll be 100 [qualifying] points, whatever it is. We’re going for the bonus round. Mike [Smith, winning rider] has always been really high on this horse.”
A $450,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase that runs for Michael Tabor, John Magnier and Derrick Smith, War Academy is from stakes-placed Cabbage Key from the family of European Grade I winner Gay Gallanta.
