Coolmore sponsored the Grade III Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday so it was fitting to see the offspring of one of their sires take the prize in Winning Cause (3c Giant’s Causeway x Raffishing Look, by Kingmambo)
The Todd Pletcher trained colt turned in a career best performance to take the 1 and 1/16th mile contest by a length, his overall record now three wins and a second from seven starts with prizemoney in excess of $200,000.
“From the one hole, I couldn’t ask for a better trip,” winning rider Julien Leparoux explained.
“In the first turn, he put me in a good spot and I got room to get him out there (toward the middle of the track] and he just cruised around there and finished strong.”
With five Kentucky Derby hopefuls already in the stable, Todd Pletcher was asked if Winning Cause could be a sixth?
“We’ve never really talked about that with this colt,” he admitted.
“We’re just happy to have this one.”
Raced by Alto Racing, Winning Cause is the first winner for Raffishing Look, who comes from the family of Grade I winners Twilight Agenda, Go and Go, Media Puzzle and Refuse to Bend.
He is the 125th stakes-winner for champion sire Giant’s Causeway.
