German G1 glory for Giant's Causeway filly Penelopa

Giant's Causeway enjoyed a European Classic success on Sunday when Penelopa (3f Giant's Causeway-Lady Linda, by Torrential) captured the G1 Preis der Diana, the German Oaks, at Dusseldorf. The Miltcho Mintchev-trained filly, who races for her breeders Litex Commerce, finished fast in the home straight to beat the G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture (3f Galileo-Shastye, by Danehill). "This is a really nice filly," Mintchev told the Racing Post. "I've always maintained that, but she was very unlucky on her two previous starts this season. Luck was on our side today, as she got a perfect run up the inside. I'll have to think what to do with her next, but the G1 Prix Vermeille would be the obvious race." Trainer Ralph Beckett was pleased with Secret Gesture's effort and he added: "I am very happy with that, everything was in her favour today and she ran a great race, but we were beaten by a better horse on the day. We have no excuses, but she's been runner-up in two Oaks now and we shall look for another suitable opportunity."
