Sunday Double For Competitive Edge

Talented young sire Competitive Edge continued a successful start to the year on Sunday when registering a 30-minute double to take his total winners count to 31. Starting his sophomore year on a high note, Competitive Edge has already registered four winners in the first two weeks of 2020.

The first winner came at Aqueduct late in the afternoon when Future Book (3c Competitive Edge x Salute to Summer, by Colonel John) went straight to the lead from the gate. Under Jorge Vargas Jr., he opened up a five length lead in the six furlong race as they entered the stretch. His lead diminished in the final sixteenth but he still had a big enough margin to hit the line 2 ½ lengths in front for a maiden breaking victory.

Trained by Michael Maker for Three Diamonds Farm, Future Book was purchased for $150,000 as a 2-year-old last year. The colt bred by Stonegate Stables is the first foal for two-time winner Salute To Summer, a half-sister to Listed winners Miss Charm City and Jim’s Prospect.

Only half an hour after Future Book crossed the line in front, Flugel Binder (3f Competitive Edge x Skye Silver, by Badge of Silver) went off as a heavy favorite in a 5 ½ furlong sprint at Tampa Bay Downs. Flugel Binder took a more conservative approach to her victory when racing in midpack in the early stages of the race.

As they entered the turn Antonio Gallardo asked his mount to move closer to the leaders and she passed much of the field on the outside before positioning herself just behind the leaders in the stretch. It was a challenging run to get the lead but Flugel Binder took control in the final sixteenth to win by a neck.

Trained by Darien Rodriguez for Mark Taylor, this was the second top three finish in four career starts for the maiden-breaking Flugel Binder. The Spartan Team Investments-bred is the first foal out of well-bred Skye Silver, who is a half-sister to Grade I winner Harmonize. Skye Silver is the great-granddaughter of Grade I winner Chic Shirine, who is also the matriarch of the families that produced Champion Librisa Breeze and Grade I winners Keen Ice, Preservationist, and Verrazano.

The sire of winners in eight different countries, Competitive Edge ended last year among the leading freshman sires by overall winners and stakes winners, led by stakes winning My Italian Rabbi, Fierce Lady, Majestic Gold, and Sassy Seneca.
