Back To Back Group 1 Wins For Son Of Camelot

German Derby hero Sammarco (3c Camelot - Saloon Sold, by Soldier Hollow) recorded a second straight Group 1 success in Sunday’s Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich.

The Peter Schiergen-trained bay was one of two three-year-olds to take on their elders in the ten furlong feature and was ridden to chase the leaders by Rene Piechulek. Quickening upon entering the straight, he produced a challenge two furlongs out and ran on strongly to assert close home, leading by three parts of a length on the line.

“Sammarco is truly a great horse,” Schiergen said after the race. “We will now take our time to decide where to go from here. With regard to his future career as a stallion, it is so important for him to have won over different distances and he has achieved that now.”

Delighted owner/breeder Helmut von Finck said, “It was a big task and test for Sammarco, having to run against his elders from at home and abroad at the highest level, and just four weeks after winning the Derby. He is a dream of a horse and such a genuine fighter. To win this race for a third time is an overwhelming feeling.”

Sunday marked a third straight Group win for Sammarco, whose sole defeat was a close second in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic.

Later that afternoon at Clairefontaine, Any Time Soon (4f Camelot - Aquarelliste, by Danehill) continued a fantastic day for Camelot when leading home a 1-2 for the Coolmore Stud sire in the Listed Prix Luth Enchantee.

Placed in Stakes company on her last two starts, the Andre Fabre-trained filly raced in mid-division for much of the mile and a half contest and improved to lead turning for home. Running on strongly under Mickael Barzalona, she scored by a length and three quarters from Bellaciaociao (Camelot).

Owned by Ballymore Thoroughbreds, the daughter of Camelot was bred by Dayton Investments out of the top-class Danehill mare Aquarelliste.
