Butterscotch Sells for 700,000gns In Foal To Justify

Justify’s popularity in the sales ring continued at Tattersalls’ December Mare Sale on Tuesday when Group III-placed Galileo daughter Butterscotch sold for 700,000gns in-foal to the Triple Crown winner as Lot 1829.

Bought by Rob Speers and Old Mill Stud from The Castlebridge Consignment, the mare is believed to be pregnant on a February 13 cover for her first foal.

A winner on the track in addition to her Group III placing, Butterscotch is out of Group III winner Lessons In Humility, making her a half-sister to Listed winner and Group II-placed Coach House with her dam producing three winners from four runners.

"Butterscotch is a wonderful Galileo mare with stakes form on the racetrack in-foal to an unbeaten Triple Crown winner in Justify from America,” Speers said. “Of course, he’s by Scat Daddy and Scat Daddy through his own stock and No Nay Never’s stock have shown they can get turf runners so I don’t see any reason why Justify won’t.”

Mares in foal to Justify have proven to be popular with buyers this breeding stock sales season with an average of nearly $790,000 from 21 mares sold at United States breeding stock sales last month.

Last year’s Horse of the Year, Justify is the only Triple Crown winner to retire undefeated and is the best son of emerging sire-of-sires Scat Daddy.
