Snaffles (Churchill) Impresses At Down Royal

Churchill Colt Shows Rivals Clean Pair Of Heals

Snaffles (2c Churchill - Anabelle Ja, by Singspiel) shaped like a future Stakes performer when running out a five length winner of Friday’s seven furlong maiden at Down Royal.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained bay caught the eye on debut last month, when running on well in the closing stages at Leopardstown. Sent off favourite on Friday, the Demi O’Byrne-owned colt raced prominently under Shane Crosse and needed little encouragement to lead approaching the final furlong. Quickening clear, he left his rivals to fight out the placings.

Speaking after the race, assistant trainer Brendan Powell said, “I know Joseph (O'Brien) has always thought the world of him. There is so much improvement in him, you wouldn't know what is there. He could be a very nice horse.”

Connections’ regard for Snaffles is clear from his two Group 2 entries later this month. Bred by Lynch Bages, Camas Park and Arkle Bloodstock, he continues an exciting start at stud by Churchill, whose son Vadeni (Churchill) added a Listed win to his unbeaten record last month. Ladies Church (Churchill) is another Stakes winner from his first crop, and is one of three Group performers.
