Mendelssohn Yearlings Dominate Midlantic Sale

A day after siring the first session topper at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale, the Grade I winning Mendelssohn went even better by siring the $235,000 sale topper.

David Scanlon had been the underbidder on Mendelssohn’s first session topper and wasn’t going to leave without the Tuesday topper. He scored with a bid $5,000 higher than the other went for to buy the grandson of Grade I-placed Grace Anatomy.

“We loved the sire,” Scanlon told Thoroughbred Daily News. “We think he's going to be a big hit this year. Obviously, he's already been a big sales horse. “They just look like athletes. They have really good bone, good hip and great angles on them.”

Offered by Northview Stallion Station, the colt is out of a Malibu Moon mare just like the Monday topper. Named Grace Is Gone his dam is a half-sister to stakes-placed Retro. This was the second time he has visited a sales ring after bringing $100,000 as a weanling last November when offered by Four Star Sales.

The chestnut was bred by Marcus Stables LLC and descends from Grade I winner Plenty Of Grace. That mare has seen three of her daughters produce stakes placers, including the yearling’s own third dam Propriety.

Mendelssohn’s three sold at the sale were three of the top six prices. The three yearlings sold brought a total of $625,000 with an average of $208,333 and median of $230,000.
