Viareggio (Caravaggio) Wins At The Curragh

Viareggio Wins Second Straight for Caravaggio

A day after registering his first Grade I winner, Caravaggio saw daughter Viareggio (2f Caravaggio x Just Joan, by Pour Moi) register an easy second consecutive victory at the Curragh.

Stretching to a mile for the first time, the Alpha Racing-owned juvenile was prominent behind the leaders, just waiting to pounce. That moment came a quarter mile from home when Scott McCullagh unleashed her and the race was quickly over.

Viareggio took over the lead with just over a furlong left to run and was well clear by the final sixteenth, winning by 4 ¾ lengths with the third placed runner 10 ¾ lengths behind her. Only the other two runners in the top three were within 15 lengths of the winner at the end.

Trained by Jessica Harrington, the Hawes Stud-bred filly broke her maiden last out over seven furlongs before stepping up to the mile trip.

Viareggio is the second foal out of Just Joan, who is a three-quarter sister to Australian stakes-placed Danjeu and half-sister to stakes winner Tannaaf. Their dam is a half-sister to Group I winner Wannabe Grand and five other stakes performers.

Just Joan foaled a Footstepsinthesand colt on March 28.

A leading freshman sire, Caravaggio also leads all North American sires by number of juvenile winners (19), stakes winners (4), blacktype performers (7), graded stakes performers (4), and Grade I performers at 2.
