Zoffany Colt Impresses On Debut At The Curragh

Thunder Moon (2c Zoffany - Small Sacrifice, by Sadler’s Wells) emerged as a smart prospect when making an impressive debut in the seven furlong maiden at the Curragh on Sunday.

Soon settled behind the leaders by Declan McDonogh, the Joseph O’Brien-trained colt made good headway approaching the final furlong and soon led. Staying on well, he won by three lengths and three quarters, with ease.

Speaking after the race, O’Brien’s assistant trainer Brendan Powell commented, “I think he's a smart horse. He's typical of a Zoffany; very relaxed and a lovely natured horse. Declan said he didn't even have to hit him. He was just niggling him and as soon as he really grabbed hold of him, gave him a squeeze, he picked up and found that turn of foot. That's a good asset to have. He'll make up into a lovely three-year-old.”

Owned by Anne Marie O’Brien, Thunder Moon was bred by Whisperview Trading and is closely related to Listed winner Anticipation (Fastnet Rock).

Earlier in the day at Hoppegarten, the Henk Grewe-trained Juanito (2c Zoffany - Julissima, by Beat Hollow) made all to win the seven furlong maiden.

Making his second start, the €100,000 yearling purchase showed the benefit of experience when running on under hands and heels to score by three lengths. Owned by Stall Eines Tages, the son of Zoffany was bred by Gestut Brummerhof.
