With 2018 providing Galileo with his tenth sires’ championship in 11 years, he is proving every bit as extraordinary as his own sire, Sadler’s Wells. Although Galileo is a grandson of NORTHERN DANCER, much of his success has been with mares with Northern Dancer blood, with the DANZIG branch achieving extraordinary success. His 31 northern hemisphere Group winners out of DANEHILL mares feature the brilliant Frankel, the champion two-year-old Teofilo, the King George winner Highland Reel, the classic winners Intello, Golden Lilac, Cima de Triomphe and Roderic O’Connor, as well as the 2018 2yo Japan.
Galileo’s triple Gr.1 winner Lush Lashes, the dual classic winner Capri and the Gr.2 winner Spiritjim are among his 5 Group winners from 25 foals out of ANABAA mares and the Gr.1 winner Adelaide is another whose broodmare sire is a son of DANZIG.
Galileo is now being extensively used on mares by sons of DANEHILL and the signs are highly encouraging. His record with daughters of DANEHILL DANCER is increasingly impressive, with ten Group winners headed by the multiple Gr.1 winners Minding, The Gurkha and Alice Springs. Galileo’s Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Magician is out of a mare by Danehill’s fast son MOZART and his 2018 St Leger winner Kew Gardens has a dam by DESERT KING, while the American Gr.1 winners Photo Call and Line of Duty are out of ROCK OF GIBRALTAR mares. The Gr.1 2yo winner Johannes Vermeer has a dam by HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR and mares by DANSILI are responsible for the 2017 Derby runner-up Cliffs of Moher and the smart Magic Wand. Galileo has also made a very bright start with daughters of EXCEED AND EXCEL, with the Gr.2 winners Anthony van Dyck and Mission Impassible from only 3 foals. Now Galileo has top winners from three generations of the Danehill male line, having sired the dual classic winner Winter from a CHOISIR mare. FASTNET ROCK mares also merit serious consideration, as he has shone with Galileo’s broodmare daughters.
As Galileo’s dam produced the exceptional Sea The Stars to CAPE CROSS, mares by GREEN DESERT and his sons have obvious appeal. His record with GREEN DESERT mares features the Epsom Oaks winner Was. He also owes the outstanding dual Derby winner Australia to Ouija Board, a brilliant daughter of CAPE CROSS.
With 22% black-type winners, Galileo has enjoyed tremendous success with daughters of STORM CAT. Galileo now has four Guineas winners among this cross’s 11 Group/Graded winners, with Churchill and Gleneagles both taking the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, with Misty For Me and Marvellous both taking the Irish 1,000 Guineas. As Gleneagles, Marvellous and Decorated Knight are out of sisters to Giant’s Causeway, it is only a matter of time before Galileo shines with GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mares. Storm Cat’s grandson JOHANNESBURG sired the dam of Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks winner Seventh Heaven.
Galileo is an excellent mate for mares whose pedigrees include NUREYEV, a three-parts-brother to Sadler’s Wells. The Gr.2 winner Incanto Dream and the Gr.3 winner South Easter are among his 12 foals out of NUREYEV mares. The top miler Rip Van Winkle is out of a daughter of STRAVINSKY and there are eight Group winners, headed by Gr.1 winners Rhododendron, Hydrangea and The United States among his 31 foals out of daughters of PIVOTAL. He also sired the Oaks winner Forever Together and Gr.1 2yo winner Together Forever from a THEATRICAL mare. Sadler’s Wells’ brother FAIRY KING sired the second dam of the Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks and Fairy King’s son ENCOSTA DE LAGO is the broodmare sire of 2018 2yo Gr.2 winner Mohawk.
Galileo has consistently shone with the MILL REEF line, siring Gr.1 winners from three generations of mares from this line. His Irish St Leger winners Sans Frontieres and Alandi are respectively out of daughters of SHIRLEY HEIGHTS and his son DARSHAAN, while his Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach has a dam by Darshaan’s son MARK OF ESTEEM. His Gr.1 winner Imperial Monarch is out of a mare by Shirley Heights’ son SLIP ANCHOR. Altogether Galileo has ten Group winners out of DARSHAAN mares and his brilliant daughter Minding has a second dam by DARSHAAN. Galileo has 15% stakes winners with DARSHAAN and 23% with MARK OF ESTEEM.
Galileo sired the Gr.1 winner Galikova from a BLUSHING GROOM mare. A RAINBOW QUEST mare is the second dam of Frankel and Noble Mission, ARAZI sired the second dam of Lush Lashes and RAHY sired the second dams of Decorated Knight, Marvellous, Gleneagles, Happily and Deauville.
Galileo also has three Group winners, including a classic winner, from mares by INDIAN RIDGE, and he sired the Gr.1 winner Curvy from an INCHINOR mare. Also, the Gr.1 winners Maybe, Magical, Rhododendron and Photo Call are among the seven Group winners with a second dam by INDIAN RIDGE. Galileo’s Derby winner New Approach is out of a daughter of AHONOORA.
Galileo is excelling with the ROBERTO line, notably siring Nathaniel, Great Heavens and Seville from daughters of SILVER HAWK. He has 45% stakes winners with SILVER HAWK mares. He has also sired Group winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER, KRIS S., LEAR FAN, RED RANSOM, DR FONG and SRI PEKAN. His partnership with INTIKHAB is proving tremendously effective, with four Group winners from ten foals, including his outstanding Arc winner Found.
The St Leger winner Sixties Icon and the Australian Gr.2 winner Gallant Tess are from DIESIS mares, so he suits the SHARPEN UP line. Roderic O’Connor has a second dam by KRIS. Galileo also has five Group winners out of mares inbred 3x3 to Sharpen Up.
Galileo has numerous good winners inbred to MR PROSPECTOR within four generations. For example, his high-class daughters Ballydoyle, Misty For Me and Tapestry have second dams by MR PROSPECTOR. Galileo also sired the Derby winner Ruler of the World and the top-class Ulysses from KINGMAMBO mares, the Irish St Leger winner Order of St George from a GONE WEST mare and the Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks from a daughter of MACHIAVELLIAN. MAJESTIC LIGHT, another Raise A Native line stallion, sired the second dam of Teofilo.
BERING and his son PENNEKAMP represent another branch of the NATIVE DANCER male line which demands serious consideration. Galileo’s foals out of Bering mares include the Derby second At First Sight, while his Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach and the Gr.3 winner Quest For Peace have BERING second dams. His foals out of PENNEKAMP mares feature the Gr.1 winners Together and Lily of the Valley.
