The celebrated Galileo-Danehill cross has produced numerous high-quality racehorses, headed by the multiple Gr.1 winners Frankel, Highland Reel and Teofilo. Gustav Klimt staked his claim to being one of the fastest members of this distinguished club. Having won a Curragh maiden over seven furlongs on July 2, Gustav Klimt travelled to Newmarket for the Gr.2 Superlative S. over the same distance. Despite being stopped in his tracks coming to the final quarter mile, he quickened very well to win. He made a winning reappearance in the 2,000 Guineas Trial S. over seven furlongs at Leopardstown and also finished a half-length second in the St James’s Palace S. and third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Prix Jean Prat and the Haydock Sprint Cup.
Gustav Klimt’s pedigree shouts stallion success. His dam Massarra is a Group-placed full-sister to Kodiac and is closely related to Invincible Spirit, another champion sire of 2yos. Massarra has also produced a Gr.1-winning 2yo. Gustav Klimt’s second dam Rafha won the Prix de Diane.
There are plenty of pointers available from the stallion careers of Teofilo, Frankel and Intello, three of Galileo’s other top winners out of Danehill mares. An extra line of DANZIG is proving no problem for them, and more Danzig blood should reinforce Gustav Klimt’s 2yo ability.
Frankel’s early crops contain Group winners out of daughters of GREEN DESERT and OASIS DREAM (2). The GREEN DESERT branch has enjoyed Gr.1 success with Teofilo and Intello. Teofilo’s Gr.1 winner Havana Gold has a dam by DESERT STYLE, whereas Intello’s first Gr.1 winner Intellogent has a dam by KHELEYF (another KHELEYF mare produced Gr.1 winner Tiggy Wiggy to Kodiac). Teofilo also has Group winners out of daughters of GREEN DESERT and OASIS DREAM.
Other sons of DANZIG which have succeeded with Teofilo are SHAADI, ZIETEN and ANABAA. The DANEHILL branch is also cropping up with these stallions, and they have black-type winners inbred 3x3 to DANEHILL out of mares by DANEHILL DANCER, REDOUTE’S CHOICE, CLODOVIL, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR and DESERT KING. Gustav Klimt could therefore suit mares by other fast and precocious sons of Danehill, such as EXCEED AND EXCEL, FASTNET ROCK, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR and CAMACHO.
An ACCLAMATION mare produced Massaat, one of Teofilo’s fastest winners, and Kodiac has Group winners with dams by ROYAL APPLAUSE and his son ACCLAMATION. Daughters of DARK ANGEL are therefore well worth trying with Gustav Klimt.
Frankel has Gr.1 and Gr.3 winners out of mares by AHONOORA’s sons INCHINOR and INDIAN RIDGE.
The MR PROSPECTOR line merits serious consideration. Frankel has 5 SW’s from 12 foals out of KINGMAMBO mares (42%) and Gr.1 winner Without Parole is from a daughter of LEMON DROP KID. Teofilo’s three stakes winners with KINGMAMBO dams include the Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter. He also has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners out of mares by DUBAI DESTINATION. Kodiac’s Gr.1 winner Best Solution has a dam by KINGMAMBO. MACHIAVELLIAN line mares are highly attractive, they have a Gr.1 winner by Teofilo and a Gr.2 winner by Frankel, and Intello has a Gr.3 winner with a dam by MEDICEAN. Daughters of DUBAWI daughters produced the fast Tantheem by Teofilo, as well as a Gr.1 winner by Frankel. There are also Frankel Group winners with dams by GONE WEST, WOODMAN, CHESTER HOUSE and VETTORI.
Inbreeding to SADLER’S WELLS is becoming an option with Galileo’s stallion sons. The outstanding Enable is inbred 3x2, and stallions bred on the Galileo-Danehill cross have sired winners of the Oaks and the Dewhurst Stakes from daughters of MONTJEU. Frankel had two first-crop Group winners with second dams by SADLER’S WELLS.
The line descending from NUREYEV is thriving with these Galileo-Danehill cross stallions. Teofilo has stakes winners out of daughters of NUREYEV, POLAR FALCON and PEINTRE CELEBRE, while Frankel has sired Gr.1 winners Cracksman and Veracious from PIVOTAL mares. Kodiac sired the Gr.1 winner Fairyland from a daughter of PIVOTAL.
Mares from the STORM CAT line have established a terrific partnership with Galileo and this line demands trying with Gustav Klimt. Teofilo has a Gr.1 2yo winner out of a GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mare and Frankel has a Gr.1-winning miler out of a HENNESSY mare. Kodiac has a Gr.1 winner with a dam by SHAMARDAL while GIANT’S CAUSEWAY sired the dam of a Gr.3 winner and also sired the second dam of a Gr.2 winner.
The Sadler’s Wells male line thrives with SHIRLEY HEIGHTS line mares. Teofilo has excelled with MARK OF ESTEEM, siring Gr.1 winner Ajman Princess, Gr.2 winner Permian and the Hong Kong star Exultant. Frankel has sired Gr.1 winner Logician from a DAYLAMI mare, plus Group winners from mares by DARSHAAN and DALAKHANI.
Galileo is excellent with ROBERTO line mares. Teofilo has two stakes winners with DR FONG dams and Frankel sired the smart Monarch’s Glen from a LEAR FAN mare, plus a Listed winner from a DYNAFORMER mare.
The BLUSHING GROOM line also has a lot to offer. Teofilo has a Gr.1 winner with a RAINBOW QUEST mare and Gr.2 winners from QUEST TO FAME and GROOM DANCER daughters. Both Teofilo and Frankel have Gr.2 winners with dams by RAHY.
Teofilo has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners out of DIESIS mares, and both Frankel and Intello have Group winners out of SELKIRK mares, so SHARPEN UP line mares will suit Gustav Klimt.
