U S Navy Flag
U S Navy Flag could hardly possess a more powerful pedigree. His sire War Front’s ability to upgrade his mares has transformed him into one of Kentucky’s highest-priced stallions. And U S Navy Flag’s broodmare sire Galileo, who has an even higher profile, has enjoyed great success with U S Navy Flag’s second dam, the Storm Cat mare Butterfly Cove. Her offspring by Galileo include three black-type winners, most notably Ballydoyle, a Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner who finished second in the 1,000 Guineas, and U S Navy Flag’s dam Misty For Me. This top-class filly was good enough to win four Gr.1 races, including the Prix Marcel Boussac and Irish 1,000 Guineas, and she is proving equally talented as a broodmare. Her three Group/Graded winners include U S Navy Flag’s extraordinarily tough sister Roly Poly. After making a winning debut as early as the April of her 2yo season, Roly Poly trained on so magnificently that she gained Gr.1 victories over a mile on her 13th, 14th and 16th appearances.
U S Navy Flag has displayed similar talent and toughness, but mainly at distances short of a mile. He proved highly progressive during an 11-race juvenile campaign which saw him win three consecutive Group races. He won the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes and then returned to Newmarket only two weeks later to take the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes by two and a half lengths. Although he managed to take second place in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, U S Navy Flag showed his true worth when he dropped back to six furlongs in the Gr.1 July Cup. In front all the way, he won by nearly two lengths.
With Danzig and Galileo as his grandsires, U S Navy Flag will create a degree of inbreeding with many European mares. His speed and precocity suggest he will shine with DANZIG inbreeding. Mares by sons of DANEHILL create just 3x4 to Danzig. This opens the door to mares by CAMACHO, CLODOVIL, DANEHILL DANCER, DANETIME, DANSILI, EXCEED AND EXCEL, FASTNET ROCK, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, KODIAC, MOZART and ROCK OF GIBRALTAR. There is plenty of scope for mares by grandsons of DANEHILL, such as CHOISIR and MASTERCRAFTSMAN.
Mares by sons of GREEN DESERT, such as CAPE CROSS, DESERT STYLE, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, KHELEYF and OASIS DREAM, also create only 4x3 to Danzig. U S Navy Flag could prove ideal as a means of injecting precocious speed into mares by SEA THE STARS. Mares by LAWMAN and SHOWCASING also appeal.
NUREYEV sired the champion 2yo Fasliyev from U S Navy Flag’s family and U S Navy Flag looks sure to be suited by mares by PIVOTAL and his sons, including SIYOUNI (which produce 3x5 to Danzig) and KYLLACHY.
Although U S Navy Flag is out of a grand-daughter of SADLER’S WELLS, this again is no problem, War Front has 2YO Gr.1 winners out of a SADLER’S WELLS mare and also has a Gr.2 winner out of an EL PRADO mare and a Gr.3 winner with a MONTJEU dam. Mares by HIGH CHAPARRAL and MONTJEU create 4x3 to SADLER’S WELLS.
At least seven other grandsons of Danzig have sired Gr.1 winners from STORM CAT line mares, including from daughters of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, HENNESSY, TALE OF THE CAT and FOREST WILDCAT. U S Navy Flag has a second dam by STORM CAT, but he is still an option for this line, creating only 4x3 with mares by Storm Cat’s sons. Mares by SHAMARDAL and SCAT DADDY should be guaranteed to produce good two-year-olds. Mares by LOPE DE VEGA should also play to U S Navy Flag’s strengths.
Daughters of ACCLAMATION, DARK ANGEL and EQUIANO are others guaranteed to reinforce U S Navy Flag’s precocity and speed.
War Front has Graded winners from mares by two BLUSHING GROOM line stallions, including the top-class Declaration of War from a RAHY mare.
The ROBERTO male line should also suit well, as War Front has Graded winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER and RED RANSOM, and from mares by ARCH, a son of KRIS S. He also has Gr.1 and Gr.2 winners with second dams by SILVER HAWK.
