Al Modayar 22nd Winner For Competitive Edge
It was another impressive win for a runner from Competitive Edge's first crop when Al Modayar (2c Competitive Edge x Savannah, by Lion Heart) put up a gutsy performance to break his maiden at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday to become his sire’s 22nd winner.
Running over seven furlongs on the dirt, Al Modayar was hustled out of the gate by Fernando Jara and held the lead while running on the rail. Jara sat comfortably on his mount for much of the race, asking him to run as they hit the straight. The pair was confronted by a rival throughout the stretch run but Al Modayar refused to give in and continued to put his nose in front every time the rival went for his lead.
In the end, the pair won by a neck for trainer Ali Rashid Al Rayhi and owners H & B. It was the second start for the 2-year-old, who made his debut at the track last month.
“Credit to the horse because he really likes to fight and has shown a great attitude to win this. When challenged, he fought back very bravely,” Jara told Dubai Racing Club's publicity department.
Bred by V. Gail Ray, Al Modayar was a $75,000 weanling purchase at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale before being purchased as a yearling at the Keeneland September Sale by Star Bloodstock. He made his last appearance in the sales ring earlier this year when sold at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale to Durcan Bloodstock.
It has been a top few weeks for top freshman sire Competitive Edge, who has sired seven winners in four countries this month to put him just one winner behind leading freshman sire and studmate American Pharoah at 23 winners.
