Champs Elysees Head Shot

Champagne sparkles for Elysees

Chepstow’s maiden hurdle on Saturday has a good record at throwing up future top performers and the five-time Flat winner Champagne Champ (6g Champs Elysees-Maramba, by Rainbow Quest) looked another bright prospect when winning this year’s renewal.

Traned by Rod Millman for owner-breeder Five Horses Ltd, the Champs Elysees gelding was ridden out by Nick Scholfield to come out best in the 15-runner field.

Previous winners of the race include the likes of Holywell and Annacotty and the Racing Post predicted that Champagne Champ could also go on to bigger things.

“They went a respectable gallop on soft ground and it is sound form,” read the Racing Post Analysis. “CHAMPAGNE CHAMP, previously a useful, multiple winner from 1m4f-2m on the Flat, was stepping up 4f in trip after a recently encouraging hurdling debut on heavy at Wincanton.

“The son of Champs Elysees coped well with the soft conditions in a prominent pitch throughout, sticking to his task admirably over the last few hurdles and winning a shade cosily after the last. He can improve again on better ground and should have a productive spring.
