Choisir Filly Wins Champagne
Brilliant filly Eloping (3f Choisir x Runaway Jesse, by Rory’s Jester) returned to her sparkling best at Moonee Valley on Friday night when leading her rivals a merry dance to win the Group III MVRC Champagne Stakes over 1200 metres. Third when resuming from a spell behind older horses in the Group II MVRC McEwen Stakes, Eloping appreciated a drop back to fillies company, leading throughout and kicking clear for a dominant length and a half win. Trained by Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison, Eloping had a busy juvenile season winning four of eight starts and has obviously trained on in good style taking her overall record to five wins from 10 starts with prizemoney in excess of $850,000. “She’s one of the toughest fillies I’ve ever ridden,” said winning rider Steve Baster who has been a regular partner for the filly. “She gives her all. She’s a beauty!” Eloping has plenty of sprint options to choose from this spring with the Listed MRC Blue Sapphire Stakes on October 15 a likely target. “She’s a little star,” said Craig Widdison. “What you see is what you get.” A $120,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Southern Cross Breeders draft for Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock, Eloping runs for a big syndicate of women, many of them first time owners, that have enjoyed a lot of bang for their buck!. Eloping is a full sister to Group II placed Jesse’s Girl being the second winner from Runaway Jesse, a half-sister by Rory’s Jester to Group III winner All Courage. The current yearling from Runaway Jesse, a colt by Choisir’s champion son Starspangledbanner, was sold at Magic Millions by Rosemont Stud for $170,000 to Mark Riley and won his first barrier trial at Cranbourne earlier this week under the name Of The Brave. . Eloping is typical of the progeny of Coolmore stalwart Choisir, who stands at a fee of $29,700.
