Competitive Saint (Competitive Edge) winning on debut at Gulfstream Park

Competitive Saint Newest Winner For Competitive Edge

Competitive Saint (3g Competitive Edge x W W Old School, by Royal Academy) became the newest winner for Competitive Edge on Saturday in his debut at Gulfstream Park.

Racing over six furlongs on dirt with Edgard Zayas aboard, Competitive Saint broke quickly and immediately put himself in a battle for the lead. After a few strides, he was content to drop back to the leader’s hip where he stayed a few paths off the rail. In mid-turn, Zayas decided it was time for his mount to take over the lead and started urging him forward with Competitive Saint happy to comply.

As they moved into the stretch, Competitive Saint had a clear lead though the win was far from assured with three horses trying to run him down. In the end they were no match for Competitive Saint with the 3-year-old keeping his advantage to win by 1½ lengths.

Trained by George Weaver for Bona Venture Stables, the debutant was a $160,000 OBS March 2-Year-Old for his sire last year after selling for $90,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July sale in 2018.

The half-brother to Listed placed Dubdubwatson was bred by Patrick Durbin and James Lynch and is out of two-time winner W W Old School, whose five winners from six to race have combined for 37 victories. They hail from the family of Italian Champion Ibn Bey and Group I winners Roseate Tern and Red Bloom.

W W Old School also has a 2-year-old Lookin At Lucky filly named Cardioversion to come.

The leading first crop sire by winners last year, Competitive Edge has sired 44 winners in his first crop, including four stakes winners and seven stakes horses.
