Competitive Saint Stays Undefeated in Saratoga Allowance
It was a second win in as many starts for Competitive Saint (3g Competitive Edge x W W Old School, by Royal Academy) on Sunday in a Saratoga Allowance.
Speeding along the rail in the 5½ furlong turf race, Competitive Saint was content to run a few lengths behind the leader until they hit the stretch. Racing with Luis Saez aboard, Competitive Saint had plenty to do in the closing stages but with a furlong to go, he made a bid for the lead.
In the final sixteenth of a mile, Competitive Saint entered a three-way duel for the lead that came down to a photo to decide the winner. The late run by Competitive Saint paid off with the gelding’s nose in front at the line to beat older horses in only his second start for trainer George Weaver.
A $160,000 2-year-old purchase by racing owner Bona Venture Stables, Competitive Saint was bred by Patrick Durbin and James Lynch in Kentucky.
One of five winners out of his dam, Competitive Saint is a half-brother to Listed placed Dubdubwatson. The gelding hails from the family of Group I winners Ibn Bey and Roseate Tern along with Red Bloom.
Among the leading freshman sires by winners in 2019, Competitive Edge is the sire of 50 worldwide winners and eight stakes horses, including four stakes winners led by dual stakes winner My Italian Rabbi.
