Imperial Monarch Mare Gains First Win Over Hurdles
The Paul Nicholls-trained Cill Anna (4f Imperial Monarch - Technohead, by Distinctly North) produced a late challenge to take Tuesday’s Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Warwick.
Bought by Nicholls and Tom Malone for £115,000 after winning her sole point-to-point start for Colin Bowe, she made a promising start to her hurdle career earlier in the month, when finishing third. Harry Cobden rode her to chase the leader and waited until after three out to shake the reins. Ridden approaching the final flight, she ran on to lead close home and beat the favourite Emmas Joy by half a length, the pair racing eight lengths clear of the third.
Given her strong finish, it would appear that further improvement can be expected from Cill Anna over further distances. Owned by the Stewart family and bred by Ms Marisa and Michael Bourke, she comes from the first crop of Beeches Stud sire Imperial Monarch.
