Son Of Requinto Lands Valuable Prize On Return
The William Haggas-trained Mojito (5g Requinto - Narva, by Grand Slam) made a successful return from a long absence to justify favoritism in Saturday’s Coral Challenge at Sandown.
A maiden winner at two and victorious in a valuable handicap as a three-year-old, the Fiona Carmichael-owned bay made his reappearance over a mile in the £46,000 contest. Leading after a furlong under Frankie Dettori, he was travelling strongly two furlongs out and was shaken up approaching the final furlong. Staying on well, he beat his owner’s old friend Escobar by a length and a quarter, with a further half a length back to Petrus (Zoffany) in third.
Speaking after the race, Maureen Haggas said, “He has always been a nice horse and has been really good in his training this year.”
A €320,000 yearling buy, Mojito was bred by Earl Ecurie Du Grand Chene and has a two-year-old full-brother in training with Karl Burke. Requinto commands €4,000 this season.
