An Irish bred filly from the first Northern Hemisphere crop of foals by champion racehorse Dylan Thomas, Aeronwy (3f Dylan Thomas x La Pepite, by Mr Prospector) opened her account at the second time of asking at Mornington in Australia on Tuesday.
The Peter Moody trained filly improved on her debut second on December 7 to win the 1500 metre maiden by the best part of a length as a well backed favourite.
Running in the colours of well known Australian breeder Stuart Ramsey, the blue-blooded filly is also part owned by Michael Kirwan and Tony Vereker, who were no doubt attracted to her fabulous pedigree.
Aeronwy was purchased by Irish bloodstock agent Dermot Farrington for 85,000 guineas at the 2009 Tattersalls December Foal Sale and sent to Australia in May, 2010.
Aeronwy is a half-sister to stakes-winner Soldera and is one of seven winners from the Mr Prospector mare La Pepite, a daughter of super producer Fanfreluche, whose descendants have left two champion Australian sires in Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur.
Being bred to Northern Hemisphere time (she was foaled on April 8, 2009) means Aeronwy has to give quite a bit of start to her rivals when competing against her own age, but as we saw with Makybe Diva, this means nothing as time wears on.
The oldest Australian bred progeny by Dylan Thomas are two year-olds this season.
