Having his second run for new trainer Joe Pride, veteran sprinter News Alert (7g Danehill Dancer x Breaking News, by Brief Truce) posted a narrow victory in the Listed ATC Razor Sharp Handicap at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
A rejuvenated News Alert settled off the pace for Hugh Bowman and finished strongly to score a nose win in a thrilling finish to the 1200 metre sprint over Rarefied.
“I’m a terrible judge of a photo. I thought he’d got done,” Pride said.
The trainer conceded News Alert was short of the top grade, but said there was plenty left in the evergreen galloper.
“We’ll look for some of the sprint races in the autumn. I don’t think he’s a Group One horse but there’s plenty of nice races around for him,” he said.
Winning rider Hugh Bowman praised the son of Danehill Dancer saying he won the race on “guts”.
“He’s all guts. He’s got a bit of class, it’s a pleasure to ride horses like this,” Bowman said.
Bred by Hobartville Stud and sold privately as a tried horse to current owner Frank Scali, News Alert has won nine races and placed 12 times from 35 starts earning $614,600 in prizemoney.
News Alert is the only stakes-winner to date for his dam Breaking News, a half-sister by Brief Truce to stakes-winner Force Apollo from the family of Golden Slipper winner Star Watch.
Breaking News delivered a filly foal by Danehill Dancer’s champion son Choisir this spring.
Danehill Dancer has seven yearlings for Magic Millions in January including the three-quarter sister to Inglis Nursery winner Diamond Earth.
