Northern Hemisphere bred mare Qushchi (5m Encosta de Lago x La Persiana, by Daylami) scored her first Black Type success when taking out the $100,000 Waya Stakes at Saratoga on Monday.
Now trained by Graham Motion after starting her career in the UK with William Jarvis, Qushchi placed at her first three runs in the US this year before breaking through to win this mile and a half contest on turf by a length and three-quarters.
“I think she had been a little unlucky,” said Graham Motion.
“She was just nailed right on the wire at Churchill last time. She actually was interfered with by my other filly, Strathnaver, at Keeneland. We’ll think about the [GIII] Glens Falls [Sept. 2], but it might be a little quick.”
Qushchi is the best of three winners from stakes-winning Daylami mare La Persiana, a half-sister to Group I winner and former leading sire Grand Lodge.
She is the 94th stakes-winner worldwide for champion Australian sire Encosta de Lago, who stands at a fee of $55,000 this year.
