Another Kiwi Success for Tale of the Cat
Talented mare The Diamond One (5m Tale of the Cat x The Jewel, by O’Reilly) posted another feature win when taking out the Group III Cuddle Stakes at Trentham in New Zealand.
The win was an emotional one as her trainer Steve Anderton recently passed away from injuries suffered in a float accident on his property.
His wife Claire and father Hec formed a partnership to take over the stable and The Diamond One has been racing in top form.
“The kids and her get me up every morning,” Claire Anderton said. “She always tries really hard.
“As long as she comes through this okay she will head up Te Aroha for the Breeders’ Stakes.”
Raced by her breeders the Dennis brothers, The Diamond One enjoyed a cosy run close to the pace and she wouldn’t be denied in the straight, going on to win the 1600 metre feature by a head.
Fourth in the Grade I New Zealand Thousand Guineas as a three year-old, the Diamond One has always shown above average ability and has the overall record of seven wins and six placings from 17 starts with prizemoney topping $200,000.
Retained to race, The Diamond One is a half-sister to stakes-placed The Glitzy One and is the best of three winners for dual Group I winning O’Reilly mare The Jewel, who comes from the family of numerous Group I winners including The Phantom and The Phantom Chance.
Tale of the Cat has achieved success all over the world and is still going strong in the US. The 21 year-old stands at a fee of $30,000 in 2015.
