Brilliant Flemington Victory for Gentleman Roy
In a week when So You Think quietly passed 100 Australian winners for the season one of his shining lights was progressive gelding Gentleman Roy (5g So You Think x La La Land, by Last Tycoon), who scored a commanding win at Flemington.
Trained at Lindsay Park by Ben and JD Hayes, Gentleman Roy has been working steadily through his grades this preparation and soared to new heights with this four length win in the Benchmark 84 event over 1600m.
Gentleman Roy has had five runs this preparation for four wins and a second, his overall record standing at five wins and two placings from nine starts with prizemoney topping $200,000.
“He can maintain a good hard sprint to the finish line and he improved today and I think it was a very exciting win by the horse,” said Ben Hayes, who indicated the Group II VRC Blamey Stakes on March 5 may be an option going forward.
Retained to race by his breeder Peter Woods, Gentleman Roy is a half-brother to stakes-winner and $1.2million earner Jacquinot Bay and is one of five winners from winning Last Tycoon (IRE) mare La La Land, a half-sister to stakes-winner Wake Me Not.
