€220,000 High Chaparral colt is Deauville star

A stunning son of High Chaparral topped day three of Arqana’s August Yearling Sale at Deauville on Monday when selling for 220,000 euros to Nicolas de Watrigant of the Mandore International Agency. The Ecurie de Monceaux offering, out of the Monsun mare Nightdance Sun, comes from the outstanding German family of classic winners Next Desert and Next Gina. De Watrigant was buying the High Chaparral colt for Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani of Qatar and the agent was struck by his purchase’s resemblance to the sire’s best son. “In my opinion, he is a carbon copy of So You Think and I hope he goes as well,” de Watrigant told TDN.  “He’s got size and is a very well-balanced horse. He’s a very good walker and looks more of a 3-year-old type who might need some time. He will be trained in France and we’ll give him every chance.” High Chaparral has been making quite a splash at Deauville and at the sale’s opening session on Saturday night he was responsible for another 220,000 euros colt, selling to Demi O’Byrne. This Newsells Park Stud-sold colt, out of the Platini mare Night Teeny, hails from the same German family as Monday’s top lot. High Chaparral is standing for a fee of AUS$77,000 at Coolmore Australia for the 2012 season while So You Think has retired for a fee of AUS$66,000.
