Fastnet Metro Double at Newcastle
Reigning champion sire Fastnet Rock featured with a metropolitan double at the ATC metropolitan meeting at Newcastle on Wednesday with smart wins for progressive four year-olds City of Light and Net Worth.
A $180,000 Magic Millions Perth purchase from the Woodside Park Stud draft for Star Thoroughbreds, the Gai Waterhouse trained City of Light (4g Fastnet Rock x Munchie, by Snippets) broke his maiden last start in impressive fashion at Hawkesbury and went right on with it in the Benchmark 70 event over 1300 metres.
He led throughout for Tommy Berry to beat another Fastnet Rock in Berrimilla by half a length and looks to have more wins in store.
City of Light is a half-brother to smart Melbourne metropolitan winner Ravenous Lass and is one of two winners from the Snippets mare Munchie.
Making it a race to race double for Fastnet Rock was the Darren Smith trained Net Worth (4g Fastnet Rock x A Real Dool, by Proper Reality), who coasted home to win the restricted event over 900 metres by more than two lengths.
It was the second win for Net Worth, who was an $80,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Reavill Farm and is from imported mare A Real Dool (USA).
Fastnet Rock dominated Australian racing last season finishing with 130 winners of $12.6 million in prizemoney and looks to be off and running again in hot form as we head towards spring.
